Altamont Wins At Sesser-Valier, Neoga, Cumberland Drop Losses at Tourneys

SESSER -- Altamont High School opened its stay at the Sesser-Valier Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament with a win Monday.

The Indians ran off to a 28-7 opening quarter lead and easily downed Century by an 80-21 count.

Mason Robinson got the Indians started by scoring seven points in the opening quarter while Kienon Eirhart added five. Dillan Elam then took over in the second quarter, knocking in three trifetas and a regular basket for 11 points.

Elam finished with 15 to lead Altamont while Robinson added 13 and Avery Jahraus 12. Kaidyn Miller was on the verge of double figures with nine.

In other games, Red Bud defeated Thompsonville 71-24, Goreville won over Cobden 68-29, Christopher edged Marissa-Coulterville 48-44, Sparta downed Zeigler-Royalton 83-39, Johnson City defeated Waltonville 75-62, DuQuion downed Elverado 84-26 and New Athens edged Sesser-Valier 43-24.

The tournament continues today and Wednesday and finishes out Thursday.

At Vandalia

The 50th Annual FNB Community Bank Vandalia Holiday Tournament opened with two sessions Monday.

The lone area team in the meet is Cumberland and the Pirates fell to Flora, 44-33.

Cumberland took a 10-4 opening quarter lead as Gavin Hendrix tallied six points. But Flora came back with a 13-7 second period and the score was knotted at 17-17 at halftime. The Wolves had a slight 26-25 edge going into the final quarter then had an 18-8 run for the winning margin.

Cumberland was led by Hendrix with 14 points and Trevin Magee added 12.

In other games, Greenville edged Shelbyville 63-60, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran beat Meridian 73-52, Greenville downed Okaw Valley 49-35, Shelbvyille defeated Pana 58-47 and CORL picked up its second victory, this one over Vandalia 73-50.

The tournament continues Tuesday and Wednesday and finishes out Thursday.

At Monticello

Neoga fell to Tuscola in opening round play at the Monticello Holiday Tournament Monday.

Neoga held the early lead with a 12-8 opening quarter. But Tuscola came back to tie the score at halftime, 17-17.

The two teams played to a 13-13 third quarter and the score was still tied at 30-30 going into the final period. That's when Tuscola had a 13-9 run to pull out the victory.

Two players finished in double figures for Neoga. Brady Reynolds led the way with 15 points while Quintin Richards added 14.

In other games, Clinton beat Ridgeview 68-36, Monticello won over Oakwood 59-53, Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley defeated Paxton-Buckley-Loda 48-43, Clinton downed Oakwood 57-49 and Monticello beat Ridgeview 51-42.

The tournament continues today and finishes out Wednesday.
