Newton Wins Twice At Dieterich, Neoga Drops Loss At Monticello Girls Tourney

DIETERICH -- Newton High School picked up two victories as the Dieterich Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament got underway Monday.

 

The Eagles tallied a 40-23 win over Casey-Westfield. Newton moved ahead 10-4 after the opening quarter and led 24-11 at halftime. Newton had a 16-12 second half.

Only one player hit double figures for Newton. Macy Barthelmy connected on four field goals that included a three-pointer and was one of two at the line for 10 points. Karasyn Martin and Camryn Martin scored eight points each.

In the second win, Newton had a much tougher time, taking on South Central and winning, 61-54.

South Central held a 15-11 opening quarter lead but the score was knotted at 24-24 at halftime. The Eagles then had a 19-14 third quarter and finished with the seven point win.

C. Martin led the way for Newton with 18 points on six field goals and six of eight at the line. Addy O'Dell chipped in with 13 points while K. Martin added 12.

South Central was led by Brooklyn Garrett with 29 points on 11 field goals and seven of 11 at the line. Also in double figures was Brooke Cowger with 10 points.

In the opening game of the tourney, Dieterich scored a 56-19 win over Red Hill (Bridgeport).

The Movin' Maroons ripped out to a 25-4 opening quarter lead. Miley Britton led in scoring with 13 points while Cortney Brummer and Estella Meinhart tallied 10 each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was a 60-26 winner over Casey-Westfield. BSE held a 30-16 halftime lead then had a 30-10 second half run.

Lexi Seabaugh scored 16 points on seven field goals and two of two at the line while Laney Baldrige added 14.

Dieterich ended the day with a 75-56 loss to Marshall.

The Lions led by only six points at halftime then had a 37-24 second half run.

Adi Scott and Zara Engledon scored 22 points each for Marshall.

Dieterich was led by Britton with 17 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers. Brummer added 13 and Kady Tegeler tallied 10.

The tournament continues today and will finish out Wednesday.

At Monticello

Neoga fell to Tuscola, 49-43 as the Monticello Holiday Tournament began Monday.

Neoga held a 13-12 opening quarter lead but Tuscola came back with a run to lead 21-15 at halftime. The Indians then had an 18-10 third quarter to pull ahead 33-31.

However, Tuscola reversed that score with an 18-10 final period run to claimed the six-point victory.

Neoga had three players hit double figures. Brynn Richards led with 16 while Sydney Richards and Haylee Campbell added 12 each.

Monticello finished with six three-pointers in the game by five different players. Neoga did not connected on a three-pointer.

The loss was the first of the season for Neoga which dropped to 14-1. The Indians are back in action in the tournament Tuesday againast Paxton-Buckley-Loda and Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley.

In other games, Stark County edged Monticello 35-34, Clinton won over Ridgeview 57-27, GCMS downed Paxton-Buckley-Loda 41-37, Ridgeview beat Monticello 27-21 and Stark County beat Clinton 55-35.
