Schafer Breaks School Record For Wins As EHS Claims Two, T-town Also Nabs Two Victories

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School girls basketball coach, Jeff Schafer, needed one victory to break the school record for most coaching wins. The Hearts made sure Schafer got the mark and also added to it as they tallied two victories at the Charleston Holiday Tournament Monday.

The Hearts tallied a 60-53 win over Tri-County which broke the record at 459 and won over Jacksonville, 54-33 and Schafer now stands at 460 coaching victories, breaking Coach Jim Maxedon's mark of 458.

EHS had a tougher game against Tri-County. The Hearts edged out to a 15-13 opening quarter lead but trailed Tri-County 34-29 at halftime as the Cavaliers had a 21-14 second quarter run.

But the Hearts came roaring out of the lockerroom with a 24-10 third quarter to move ahead 53-44. Bria Beals went on a run with 13 points while Saige Althoff added six.

Tri-County came back with a slight 9-7 final period but couldn't get over the Hearts third quarter charge.

Three players hit double digits for the Hearts. Madison Mapes led the way with 17 points as she connected on four baskets that included three trifectas and was a perfect six of six at the line. Beals added 15 while Althoff finshed with 12.

Effingham then continued on with a 54-33 win over Jacksonville.

The Hearts held a 15-6 opening quarter lead and led 29-16 at halftime and 47-32 going into the final quarter.

Beals led the way with 17 points on five field goals that included four three-pointers and was three of four at the line. Martin chipped in with 14 points and Niebrugge tallied nine.

Teutopolis and Coach Laurie Thompson also claimed two victories.

The Wooden Shoes opened the tournament in game one with an easy 79-10 victory over host Charleston.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 21-2 opening quarter lead, held the Trojans scoreless in the second quarter to lead 44-2.

Three players connected for double figures in the contest for the Shoes. Kaylee Niebrugge led the way with 19 points on seven field goals and a perfect five of five at the line. Emily Konkel chipped in with 14 while Chloe Probst added 10.

Taylor Bueker and Katie Kremer pulled down five rebounds each. C. Probst led in steals with five while Courtney Gibson added four. Joleen Deters, Niebrugge and C. Probst had two assists each.

Teutopolis then tallied a 70-30 victory over Danville.

Once again the Wooden Shoes ran off to a big opening quarter lead, this time 24-8. The Shoes led 43-12 at halftime and 61-20 going into the final quarter.

Niebrugge led the way this time around with 26 points on 11 field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of three at the line. Also in double figures was Konkel with 13 and C. Probst with 10.

C. Probst led in rebounds with three. Deters had four steals. Konkel led in assists with two.

The tournament continues today as Tri-County faces Danville at noon, Effingham squares off against Charleston at 1:30, Tri-County meets Jacksonville at 3, Teutopolis and Effingham go head-to-head at 4:30 and Charleston and Jacksonville end the day at 6 p.m.
