EHS Trounces Charleston, BSE Wins, CHBC Loses In Girls Basketball

Effingham ripped out to a 24-5 opening quarter lead in girls high school basketball action Tuesday evening and trounced Charleston, 66-7 in Apollo Conference action.

The Hearts' Averie Wolfe tallied eight points and Madison Mapes seven in that opening quarter run.

EHS held a 41-5 first half lead, holding the Trojans scoreless in the second and third quarters.

Mapes finished with seven field goals that included two three-pointers for 16 to lead the Hearts. Wolfe tallied 10 points. Eleven players scored for the Hearts in the contest.

With the victory Coach Jeff Schafer is one win away from tying Coach Jim Maxedon's record for most coaching victories at EHS. 

The Hearts are now 8-2 on the season overall and 3-1 in the Apollo Conference. EHS will be back in action Thursday hosting Effingham St. Anthony and Friday playing host to Lincoln in Apollo competition.

EHS was a 61-16 winner in junior varsity action. Alyssa Martin led the Hearts with 11 points while Olivia Moser and Mya Harvey added nine each.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo started slow then picked up speed for a 49-31 non-conference win over Casey-Westfield Tuesday.

Casey-Westfield held a 7-4 opening quarter lead before BSE had a 16-6 second period to lead 20-13 at halftime. BSE then had a 29-18 second half.

Alice Turco scored 13 for the winners while Jayna Ireland chipped in with 11.

Casey-Westfield was led by E. Shull with 12.

In junior varsity action, Casey-Westfield was a 20-18 winner. Leading BSE was Jaide Wilhour with six points.

At Cowden

Vandalia tallied a 61-51 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Tuesday evening.

The Vandals edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead and then had a 22-15 second quarter to lead 35-26 at halftime. Both teams scored 14 points in the third period and Vandalia had a slight 12-11 edged in the final period.

Three players scored in double figures for Vandalia. Forbes led with 18, Austin added 17 and Eckhardt 16.

CHBC was led by Macee Rodman with 16 and Gracie Heckert with 13. Mady Wojcik had eight rebounds while Ruby Stuckemeyer added seven. Heckert led in assists with 11 and steals with 3.

CHBC dropped to 8-4 on the season.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC was a 39-37 winner to improve to 3-4. Shae Nohren scored 19 and Karlee Smith 11 for the winners.

At Cowden
