St. Anthony Outlasts Altamont, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony outlasted Altamont and Grace Nelson for a 76-73 girls high school basketball victory Monday evening on a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Bulldogs ran out to a 22-11 opening quarter lead as Anna Faber scored seven and Nancy Ruholl contributed six in the run. Nelson scored five while Peyton Osteen contributed four for the Indians.

St. Anthony still controlled the tempo in the second period to lead 40-23 at halftime. Addi Nuxoll took over for the Bulldogs with six points. Nelson was starting to break loose and tallied 10 of her team's 14 points in the second quarter.

The Indians came out ready to roll in the third quarter. Nelson started connecting, hitting five regular baskets, two three-pointers and four free throws for 20 of her team's 24 points. Remi Miller added a three-pointer.

Lucy Fearday kept the Bulldogs ahead with seven points in the period.

Nelson kept rolling in the final quarter and almost pulled the contest into the win column. But St. Anthony hit its free throws.

Nelson scored 21 points on two three-pointers, four regular baskets and five of six at the line.

But the Bulldogs' Anna Faber scored seven points and three other Bulldogs connected to claim the three-point victory.

Four players hit double figures for St. Anthony. Fearday led the way with 19 points on six field goals and five of nine at the line. Anna Faber and Nuxoll scored 14 points each while Ruholl contributed 13.

Nelson finished with 20 field goals, five of those from three-point range, and was 11 of 14 at the line for 56 points.

In junior varsity action, St. Anthony was a 41-11 winner. The Bulldogs were led by Lily Gannaway with 10 points. Altamont was led by Kaylee Lurkins with six.

At Shelbyville

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City moved its record to 7-2 on the season with a 61-48 non-conference victory over Shelbyville Monday evening.

CHBC edged out to a 15-14 opening quarter lead but Shelbyville came back to knot the score at 28-28 at halftime. CHBC then came out with 10-5 third quarter run and had a 23-15 final period.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the winners with 22 points while Macee Rodman added 16 and Ruby Stuckemeyer 12. Rodman led the way in rebounds with nine while Stuckemeyer had eight. Heckert led in steals with seven. Marissa Summers had five assists.

Shelbyville's Mia Wade scored the 1,000 point of her varsity career at the Mike Walsh (Bement) Invitational Tournament during the past weekend. She was recognized at the Monday evening contest.

Shelbyville was a winner in the junior varsity matchup, 34-25. CHBC was led by Karlee Smith with 11 points.

At Neoga

Neoga had a 41-6 run over the second and third quarters in downing South Central, 59-27 as two National Trail Conference teams squared off Monday.

Neoga edged out to a 16-13 opening quarter lead then had a 19-3 second period run and 22-3 third period.

In even scoring for the Indians, Allison Worman, Sydney Richards and Haylee Campbell provided 14 points each. Worman connected on seven field goals while Richards had six field goals and two free throws and Campbell had seven field goals.

South Central was led by Taegan Webster with 11 points.

Neoga improved to 8-0 on the season and will travel to Tri-County today.

Neoga claimed the junior varsity victory, 28-18.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) edged Dieterich, 47-43 in National Trail Conference action Monday evening.

The Cardinals held a 13-11 openng quarter lead behind two three-pointers by Alexis VanDyke and five points from Allison Czyzewski.

Dieterich kept close with six points by Ruby Westendorf.

North Clay then pushed into a 27-17 halftime lead as Czyzewski continued with six more points.

North Clay had a 36-25 second half by hitting 17 of 23 free throws. Alexis VanDyke nailed three trifectas in the third quarter while Czyzewski added six more points.

VanDyke and Czyzewski scored 19 points each for the winners while Miah Ballard added 12.

Dieterich was led by Estella Meinhart with 14.

Teutopolis played host to Pana and picked up a 48-36 victory Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes' Kaylee Niebrugge led the way, scoring 12 of the team's 19 first quarter points. T-town held a 28-22 halftime lead and pushed that to 34-27 going into the final quarter.

Niebrugge finished with 11 field goals and two free throws for 24 points. Niebrugge also led in rebounds with 10. Courtney Gibson had five steals. Emily Konkel and Niebrugge had two assists each. Konkel finished with three blocked shots.

Newton tallied a 56-41 victory over Edwards County (Albion) Monday evening.

The Eagles stepped out to a 15-7 opening quarter lead and had a 24-18 second half.

Two players scored in double figures for Newton. Alexis Hetzer led the way with 13 points while Camryn Martin added 11. Hetzer led in rebounds wih 11. Elle Bennett and Addy O'Dell had three steals each. O'Dell led in assists with two.

Newton improves to 3-5 on the season and will be back in action Thursday traveling to Robinson for LIC action.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity contest, 36-26. O'Dell led the way with eight points.
