MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham Junior High School split victories with Mount Vernon Casey Zadok in boys basketball Monday.

In the seventh-grade contest, Mount Vernon led 2-0 after the first inning but the Mustangs came back to tie the score at 7-7 at halftime. Effingham moved ahead with an 8-4 third quarter run and finished out with a 27-14 victory.

Pals led the Mustangs with 14 points.

In eighth-grade action, Mount Vernon was a 65-14 winner. Mount Venron held a 21-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Leading EJHS was Jake Niebrugge with six points.

The games were the season openers for Effingham.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony picked up sevneth- and eighth-grade wins over Sigel St. Michael Monday evening.

St. Anthony claimed a 36-22 victory in the seventh-grade contest. The Bullpups edged out to a 9-4 opening quarter lead then led 24-7 at halftime. St. Michael came back with a 15-12 second half but couldn't overcome that first half deficit.

Conner Storm led the way with 15 points for the Bullpups while Durdel led St. Michael with eight.

In the eighth-grade game, G. Wilhour scored nine points in the opening quarter to move the Bullpups ahead 15-6 and held a 20-14 halftime lead.

St. Anthony had a 15-13 second half for the victory. Wilhour finished with 16 points while W. Bierman added seven.

The Sharpshooters were led by Alex Mayer with 11 points.

At Newton

Jasper County and Dieterich were each a winner Monday evening.

Jasper County edged Dieterich, 54-53 in overtime in the seventh-grade game.

Both teams scored 13 points in the opening quarter before Dieterich moved ahead 28-26 at halftime. Jasper County came back with a 11-6 third quarter but Dieterich tied the score sending the game into overtime.  Alex Schottman nailed four baskets for eight points in that quarter.

In the overtime period, Maddox Horner scored five points and Chance Mulvey a basket as Jasper County won. Mulvey finished with 21 while Horner added 13 for the winners.

Dieterich was led by A. Schottman with 14 and Bryce Bohnhoff with 13.

In eighth-grade, Dieterich was a 46-36 winner. Dieterich ran off to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and took control of the contest.

Three players scored in double figures for the winners. Ezra Cook led the way with 14 points while Levi Brummer added 13 and Gavin Meinhart 10.

Jasper County was led by Mulvey with nine.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis easily handled Flora in both seventh- and eighth-grade play Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes stepped out to a 16-2 opening quarter lead and led 27-2 at halftime.

Dylan Horn led 11 players in scoring with 11 points.

In the eighth-grade game, T-town trailed Flora 9-8 after one quarter and 18-17 at halftime.

T-town then came roaring back in the second half with a 28-8 run. Kendal Mette tallied 11 to lead the way in scoring.

At Mulberry Grove

South Central held Mulberry Grove under double figures in both games to capture big margin victories Monday evening.

South Central won the seventh-grade contest, 31-8, running out to a 20-2 halftime lead.

Beatty led the way for the winners with 13 points while Yates added seven

In the eighth-grade game, South Central held a 25-2 opening quarter lead and finished with a 52-9 victory.

Luke Shumate scored 12 while Westin Neilson added 10 for the winners.

All nine points were scored by Troy Gossett for Mulberry Grove.

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg and Newton St. Thomas split victories Monday evening.

St. Thomas was a 32-19 winner in the seventh-grade contest. St. Thomas held a 10-2 opening quarter lead and led 21-5 at halftime.

Fulton scored 25 for the winners.

Stew-Stras  was led by Mason Manhart with nine. Stew-Stras dropped to 2-3 on the season.

In the eighth-grade game, Stew-Stras led 11-8 at halftime then broke loose with a 17-2 third quarter and went on for a 37-18 win.

Jakob Gurgel led the way with 14 points while Brody Bible added 11. The eighth-graders are now 2-1 on the season.

St. Thomas was led by Fulton with 12 points.
