Teutopolis Wins, St. Anthony Falls In Regional Boys Action

FLORA -- Teutopolis High School had a slow start in the Class 2A Flora Boys Basketball Sectional Tuesday evening.

But the Wooden Shoes had a strong second half and went on for a 41-33 win over Alton Marquette.

Both teams were sluggish in that opening half. Alton Marquette edged out to an 8-7 first quarter lead as Parker Macias nailed two three-pointers. The Wooden Shoes kept close as Max Niebrugge hit a three-pointer and James NIebruagge and Caleb Siemer put in a basket each.

The Explorers then had an 8-5 second period run to lead 16-12 at halftime. Macias scored another three-pointer. All five of the Shoes points came from J. Niebrugge with two baskets and a free throw.

T-town then started to find the range in the third quarter with a 16-12 run to knot the score at 28-28. Five players scored in the quarter with Dylan Pruemer connecting for five points and Siemer four.

In the final period, T-town kept on the pressure and had a 13-5 run for the victory. B. NIebrugge hit all four of his free throws while M. Niebrugge hit his second three-pointer in the game.

Only one player finished in double figures for the Shoes. J. Niebrugge led the way with 11 points on five field goals and a free throw. M. Niebrugge added eight.

Alton Marquette was led by Owen Williams with 10. The Explorers end the season with a 19-13 record.

T-town (25-7) will now face the winner of tonight's second contest, Pana or Mount Carmel, at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday.

Class 1A St. Anthony Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony fell in its own sectional, 51-48, after leading most of the contest Tuesday evening against Tuscola.

The Bulldogs took a 15-13 opening quarter lead as Kyle Stewart connected for eight points and Max Koenig hit a three-pointer.

The lead  moved up to four points at halftime as St. Anthony had an 11-9 second quarter. Griffin Sehy scored five points while Craig Croy hit a three-pointer.

The Bulldogs were hitting 47.8 percent at the half while Tuscola connected on 38.1 percent.

In the third quarter, both teams scored 12 points and the Bulldogs held a 38-34 lead going into the final quarter. Stewart scored seven points and Croy put in another three-pointer.

But the Warriors wouldn't be denied and came back with a 17-10 run to pull out the three-point victory.

In that run, Jalen Quinn, who had scored 16 first half points, tallied five in the third period then broke loose with two baskets and was eight of nine at the free throw line for 12 in the final period and 33 for the game. Jordan Quinn added five in the final quarter.

Tuscola was 16 of 40 from the field for 40 percent and 16 of 20 from the line for 80 percent in the contest.

St. Anthony hit 55.2 percent from the field and only connected on one of five free throws.

The Bulldogs were led by Stewart with 17 and Croy with 12. St. Anthony ends the season with a 21-13 record.

Tuscola advances with a 28-6 mark to face either South Central or Macon Meridian for the championship Friday at 7 p.m.

South Central and Macon Meridian meet tonight at 7 p.m.
