Hearts Season Comes To Close With Loss In Regional

OLNEY -- Effingham High School saw its season come to a close at the Class 3A Olney Boys Basketball Regional Wednesday evening.

The Hearts fell to host Olney, 55-47.

Effingham took a 17-11 opening quarter lead as five players scored. Jett Volpi hit for five points while Garrett Wolfe and Ethan Ritz had four each.

But Olney came back with an 11-4 second period to lead 22-21 at halftime. The Tigers continued with a 15-11 third quarter as Ian Winkler connected for seven points. Olney held a 37-32 lead going into the final period.

Olney continued on with an 18-15 final period, hitting four field goals and was seven of 10 from the free throw line. The Tigers had three players in double figures as Chase Travis scored 17, Winkler 13 and Zachariah Wease with 12.

Effingham also had three players in double digits. Ritz led the way with 13 on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of two at the line. Volpi added 12 and Brayden Pals 10.

The Hearts ended the season with a 10-22 record. Olney advanced to the title contest and is unbeaten with a 26-0 mark. The Tigers will take on the winner of the Mascoutah vs. Marion contest which is tentatively scheduled for tonight.
