Effingham St. Anthony opened play in the Class 1A Patoka Boys Basketball Regional with a 71-52 win over Mulberry Grove Saturday.

Craig Croy got the Bulldogs off in the right directiorn with an 11-point opening quarter. Brock Fearday then took over the scoring duties in the second quarter with an eight-point run after scoring eight in the first period. 

The Bulldogs held a 43-21 halftime lead. Mulberry Grove came back with a 31-28 second half run but the Bulldogs were in control all the way.

Croy finished with 23 points on eight field goals and seven of seven at the line. B. Fearday chipped in with 16 points.

In other Saturday games, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran downed Sandoval 66-43 while Carlyle was a 69-37 winner over Ramsey and Nokomis defeated Patoka 63-34.

St. Anthony will now face Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 6 p.m. Wednesday while Carlyle faces Nokomis at 7:30. The winners advance to the regional championshp Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Three area teams picked up victories at the Dieterich Regional Saturday.

Altamont handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 59-26 loss. The Indians connected on 20 field goals, seven of those three-pointers, and 12 of 19 at the line in the win.

No player scored in double figures but 13 players connected for points. Mason Winn led the way with nine points while Jared Hammer added eight.

The Indians ran off to a 33-6 halftime lead and never looked back.

CHBC was led by Jadon Robertson with 14 points on five field goals and four of five at the line.

Dieterich traveled to North Clay (Louisville) in the second game of the regional and claimed a 58-42 win.

Four players scored in double figures for the Movin' Maroons. Leading the way was Luke Westendorf with 17 while Bryce Budde and Pete Britton had 12 each and  Andrew Lidy 11.

The Maroons held an 18-16 opening quarter lead and led 35-24 at halftime. Dieterich had an 11-8 third period and connected on 10 of 12 free throws in the final quarter for a 12-10 edge.

North Clay was led by Dakota Weidner with 11 and  Logan Fleener with nine.

In the third contest at Farina, the host South Central Cougars ended St. Elmo/Brownstown's season with a 63-41 victory.

The Cougars ran off to a 13-2 opening quarter lead as Spencer Johannes scored nine of his team's points. The lone basket for the Eagles came from Gavyn Smith.

St. Elmo/Brownstown got untracked but South Central outscored the Eagles 16-13 in the second period to lead 29-15 at halftime. Keenin Willshire scored seven points while Aidan Dodson five.

The Cougars had a 15-11 third quarter edged and fnished out with a 19-15 final quarter as Johannes scored nine points.

Johannes finished with nine field goals and four of six at the line for 22 points. Willshire chipped in with 16 and Watwood added 10.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Caleb Campbell with 11 points and Jarrett Pasley with nine. Brady Maxey led in rebounds with six. Adam Atwood had four assists. Campbell finished with four blocked shots. The Eagles ended the season with a 16-10 overall record and were co-champions in the Egyptian-Illini Conference with 4-1 records.

South Central advances with a 24-7 mark.

In the other contest, Cisne downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 66-43.

Wednesday's games will feature Altamont against Dieterich at 6 p.m. followed by South Central taking on Cisne at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 1A Windsor/Stewardson Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg moved on in its own regional with a victory Saturday.

The Hatchets tallied a 54-22 win over Edinburg. WSS held a 21-13 halftime lead then had a 15-9 third period and held Edinburg scoreless in the final quarter with an 18-0 run.

Austin Wittenberg scored 13 points for the winners while Samuel Vonderheide added 12. Carter Chaney and Landon Miller scored eight each.

The Hatchets improved to 24-6 on the season.

Neoga picked up a victory over Martinsville by a 39-25 count. No other information was provided.

In the second game, Casey-Westfield handed Cumberland a 54-41 loss. In the opener, Macon Meridian downed Moweaqua Central A&M, 75-49.

Altamont and Dieterich will now square off at 6 p.m. Wednesday while South Central will take on Cisne at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 2A Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Regional

In the opening games Saturday, Shelbvyille defeated Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, 54-41 and Paris won over Sullivan, 44-34.

Shelbvyille advances to face top-seeded Teutopolis at 6 p.m .Wednesday while Paris will take on Newton at 7:30. The winners meet Friday for the championship at 7:30 p.m.

 

Class 3A Olney Regional

This regional opens play Wednesday and will have  No. 8 Effingham against No. 2 Olney at 6 p.m. whel No. 3 Mascoutah faces No. 6 Marion at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship contest at 7 p.m .Friday.
