Effingham High School opened competition in its own Class 3A Girls Basketball Regional and claimed a 52-41 victory over Olney Monday evening.

The Hearts edged out to a 9-3 opening quarter lead as Sidney Donaldson scored four points. EHS held just a one-point lead at halftime, 18-17. 

Once again, EHS had a one-point third period, outscoring the Tigers, 14-13 for a 32-30 lead going into the final period. Sawyer Althoff scored six points for the Hearts.

In the final quarter, the Hearts went on a tear, outscoring Olney 20-11 for the final 11-point winning margin. Madison Mapes tallied seven while Ella Niebrugge had six.

Niebrugge finished with 12 points to lead the Hearts while Meredith Schaefer tallied 10.

In the opening game, Mount Vernon easily downed Charleston, 63-21. Ashlyn Childers led the Rams with 16 points while Dazaria James and Justice Malone had nine each.

Effingham and Mount Vernon will meet Friday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship and the right to advance to the Bethalto Civic Memorial Sectional Feb. 22.

Class 1A Cumberland Regional

Effingham St. Anthony and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed victories at the Cumberland Regional and advance to meet each other for the championship Friday at 7 p.m.

St. Anthony opened the evening with a 49-30 win over Dieterich behind Lucy Fearday's 18 points. Fearday scored her 1,000th career point in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs held a 12-8 opening quarter lead and led 22-13 at halftime. Fearday connected for six points in the opening period and then hit her 1,000th career point on her first basket in the second period. The basket came at the 5:54 mark on a putback from a rebound. She finished with 18 points that included six field goals and six of eight at the free throw line. She also pulled down nine rebounds and four steals.

The Bulldogs held a 22-13 halftime lead then had an 18-9 third quarter run. Also in double figures was Riley Guy with 17 on five field goals and seven of eight at the line. Guy had four rebounds and two steals. Abbi Hatton pulled down 11 rebounds and Anna Faber led the team in steals with five.

"It's the first time in school history on the women's side that we have had two 1,000 point career scorers make it in the same season," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios.

Dieterich was led by Miley Britton with nine points and Cortney Brummer with eight.

In the second game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City ended a stellar season for Cumberland by a 47-37 count.

The Bobcats ran out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead as Gracie Heckert knocked in eight points. Heckert continued her scoring with seven second period points and finished out with six of eight at the line in the final period for 21 points.

CHBC led 30-15 at halftime and 34-24 in the third period. Both teams tallied 13 in the final quarter.

Also in double figures for the winners was Lani Morrison with 14 on six field goals and two of four at the line. Mady Wojcik led in rebounds with nine. Heckert and L. Morrison had three steals each.

The Bobcats have also had a stellar season, tying for the National Trail Conference regular season championship with a 7-1 record, and standing at 24-6 overall.

Cumberland was led by Zoe Mitchell with 18 points on five field goals and eight of 11 at the line. The Pirates end the season with a 21-9 record, the best since the 2009-10 season.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Neoga and host Altamont advanced to the championship with victories Monday evening at the Altamont Regional.

Neoga downed North Clay (Louisville) by a 63-53 count. The Indians held a 34-22 first half lead. Neoga's Sydney Hakman knocked in two three-pointers in the opening quarter while Haylee Campbell scored six in the opening quarter and seven in the second period.

Taking over for Neoga in the third quarter was Brynn Richards with seven points.

North Clay pulled within 10 points in the third quarter as Miah Ballard scored eight points. The Cardinals and Neoga played to a 16-16 final period. North Clay's Ballard connected on two three-pointers and finished with 11 but in vain.

The Indians hit their free throws in the final period, connecting on 10 of 13. Neoga was led in scoring by Campbell with 20 points and 23 rebounds, Richards with 13 points and Sydney Hakman with 11. Neoga improved to 24-7.

North Clay was led by Ballard with 28.

In the second contest, Altamont downed South Central, 70-48.

Altamont held a 19-12 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 38-22 at halftime. Grace Nelson knocked in 13 of the 19 opening quarter points and 12 of the 19 second period points.

Nelson finished with 34 points on 13 field goals that included four three-pointers, and four of four at the line. Also in double figures were Claire Boehm with 14 and Peyton Osteen with 11. The Indians had 10 three-pointers in the game, four by Nelson and two each by Boehm and P. Osteen.

South Central was led by T. Webster with 22 points on seven field goals and eight of 10 at the line.

Neoga and Altamont will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regional title.

Class 2A Salem Regional

Teutopolis advanced to the championship game of the Class 2A Salem Regional with a victory Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes trounced host Salem, 60-15. T-town held a 16-3 opening quarter lead and led 37-8 at halftime.

Zoe Cremens led in scoring with 13 while Isabella Hardiek added 11. Kaitlyn Schumacher and Kaylee Niebrugge were on the verge of double figures with nine each.

Schumacher led the way in rebounds with 13 while Hardiek pulled down 10. Hardiek led in steals with four. Emily Konkel and Niebrugge led in assists with four each.

In the second contest, Robinson defeated Flora 54-49 in overtime.

T-town will meet Robinson at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship.

Class 2A Marshall Regional

Newton saw its season come to a close in the Class 2A Marshall Regional Monday evening.

The Eagles fell to Fairfield, 56-27. Newton edged out to a 11-10 opening quarter lead but the Mules came back with a 21-0 second period run and that was the contest.

Leading Newton was Ava Kessler with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. Amber Russelll had three assists.

Newton ends the season with a 12-19 record and was 4-4 in the Little Illini Conference for fifth place.

"I am really proud of these girls," said Newton Coach Brad Harris. "They always showed up and worked hard to get better each day. I want to say thanks to our four seniors, Amber Russell, Ava Kessler, Morgan White and Sydney Dobbins. They set a great example of leadership and hard work every day. We will miss them, but I wish them the best in their future endeavors.

"Learning all season from the senior leaderhship, I know the underclassmen will continue to work to improve and fill those roles next season. I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next year."

Fairfield advances to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m. against the winner of tonight's contest between Marshall and Mount Carmel.
