St. Anthony, Teutopolis Advance to Eighth Grade State Tournament Play

Two schools with great basketball traditions...St. Anthony and Teutopolis...are headed to 8th Grade State Tournament play this weekend.

The Bullpups and the Wooden Shoes each won their sectional games Wednesday to advance to play Saturday at State.

Teutopolis won the 8-3A Sectional at Tuscola, defeating Paris Mayo 38-8. Teutopolis had a 25-6 halftime lead on their way to the win. Scoring for Teutopolis: Gavin Addis 12, Jason Kreke 10, Landyn Buening and Isaac McWhorter 5 each, Landyn Thoele 4, and Ben Grunloh 2. The Wooden Shoes 8th graders are coached by Kent Niebrugge.

Teutopolis, now 22-4, will face Joy Mercer County (22-0) at 1pm Saturday. The 8-3A State Tournament will be played at Tolono Unity Junior High School. If Teutopolis wins, they will play again at 6:30pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony won their 8-2A Sectional Wednesday evening, defeating Findlay Okaw Valley 47-17. The victory improved St. Anthony's record to 23-3. St. Anthony was up 31-7 at halftime before posting the 30-point win. Scoring for St. Anthony: A. Lauritzen 20, C. Pennington 12, H. Brent 9, and K. Griffith 6.

St. Anthony will play in the 8-2A State Tournament at 11:30am Saturday against Waverly. The tournament will be played at Mt. Pulaski High School. If St. Anthony wins, they will play again at 5pm Saturday.

Unfortunately, the third local team playing in a sectional game Wednesday night saw their season come to an end. Effingham Sacred Heart lost to Pana Sacred Heart 55-47 in Pana. The Shamrocks finished their season with a 12-9 record. 

Meanwhile, best of success to the Teutopolis 7th graders as they will play for 3rd place honors tonight at the 7-3A State Tournament at Wenona Fieldcrest. Doug Smith's squad will take on Germantown Hills at 6pm. Teutopolis heads into the contest with a 24-2 record.
