EHS, CHBC, South Central Nab Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham High School pounded Charleston 51-13 during Senior Night festivites in girls Apollo Conference basketball Tuesday evening.

The Hearts leaped out to a 13-2 opening quarter lead as Ella Niebrugge and Coralin Ohnesorge knocked in a three-pointer each while Madison Mapes scored two baskets and Sawyer Althoff three points.

EHS continued its barrage with a 13-3 second quarter. Niebrugge connected for five points while Meredith Schaefer hit a three-pointer and a free throw.

The  Hearts finished out with a 25-8 second half run.

Only one player scored in double figures for Effingham but 10 tallied points in the contest. Schaefer finished with 10 while Niebrugge added eight.

The Hearts are now 4-6 in the conference, 17-10 overall. Charleston drops to 0-10 in the conference, 1-19 overall.

At Sandoval

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City downed Sandoval 82-39 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats zipped out to a 23-7 opening quarter lead and led 44-19 at halftime.

The Bobcats had three players finish in double figures. Lani Morrison led the way with 22 points on nine field goals and four of five at the line. Gracie Heckert added 20 points on nine field goals and two of six at the line. Ruby Stuckemeyer chipped in with 10 points.

Heckert scored her 1,000th career point in a Monday night game against Brownstown/St. Elmo. She needed 22 and scored 24 in the win. The junior tallied her 1,000th point on the same basket as her mom Katy Heckert Noble did.

Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with nine while Heckert pulled down eight. L. Morrison and Heckert had six steals each. Heckert led in assists with six.

CHBC improved to 22-4 on the season.

In junior varsity play, CHBC was a 62-43 winner. Macee Rodman tallied 20 and Ellie Miller 13 for the winners.

At Arcola

Arcola played host to Cumberland and picked up a 56-50 non-conference victory Tuesday evening.

Cumberland held a 19-12 opening quarter lead as Abbie Becker nailed a three-pointer and two regular baskets for seven points.

The Pirates held a 35-29 halftime lead. Arcola came back with a 10-5 third period run and outscored Cumberland 17-10 in the final quarter for the victory.

Leading Cumberland were Abbie Becker with 19 points on seven field goals that included five three-pointers. Zoe Mitchell also chipped in with 11 points.

South Central edged Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 61-58 Tuesday evening.

The Cougars trailed CORL 17-8 after the opening period but pulled within 29-27 at halftime as Kaitlyn Swift scored nine points.

CORL held a 51-45 lead going into the final period. But here came the Cougars. South Central ended up with a 16-7 final period run to pull out the victory. In that run, Brooklyn Garrett scored six points while Laney Webster added five and three other players contributed.

Garrett finished with 18 points for the winners while Swift added 14 and Brooke Cowger 12.
