Effingham picked up two victories over Taylorville in junior high boys basketball competition Monday.

The Mustangs won the seventh-grade contest, 35-23. EJHS took a 12-6 opening half lead and had a 23-17 second half.

Nohren scored 10 for the winners while Braddy chipped in with nine. EJHS is now 7-11 on the season.

In eighth-grade play, Effingham captured the South Central Conference championship by defeating Taylorville, 44-10. The Mustangs led 22-3 at halftime and the game was never in doubt.

Cannon Bockhorn led the Mustangs with 13 points. The team finished the conference at 5-0 and stands at 17-1 on the season.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Mount Zion in eighth-grade action, 45-41 Monday.

Mount Zion took a 14-10 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony came back to move ahead 23-22 at halftime.  Mount Zion came back with a 13-5 third period run and held on for the win.

C. Pennington led St. Anthony with 19 points while H Brent added 10. St. Anthony dropped to 15-3.

At Oblong

Cumberland claimed a 63-45 victory over Jasper County Monday in the LEIC Seventh-Grade Tournament.

Cumberland edged out to an 18-17 opening quarter lead then put the game on ice with a 21-4 second period run.

Cumberland was led by Venatta with 19, Roedl with 18 and Stewart with 14.

Jasper County was led by Hayden Mulvey with 25.

Jasper County will be back in action Wednesday against Oblong for third place.
