NEOGA -- Effingham High School took the early lead and went on to defeat Neoga 56-44 in girls basketball competition Monday evening.

The Hearts held a 21-15 opening quarter lead and led 34-27 at halftime. Neoga had an 8-7 third period but the Hearts came back with a 15-9 final quarter.

Meredith Schaefer led the way for EHS with 19 points on seven field goals, including three trifectas, and two free throws. Also in double figures was Ella Niebrugge with 14.

Neoga was led by Sydney Richards with 11 and Trista Moore with 10. The Indians fall to 16-3 on the season and will play host to St. Anthony Thursday.

The Hearts will be back in action Thursday at Paris.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick and North Clay (Louisville) were tied at 20-20 after the opening quarter and 29-29 at halftime. But CHBC started edging ahead in the third period and finished out with a 13-9 final period to pull out a 58-52 National Trail Conference win Monday evening.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points while Lani Morrison added 16 and Madison Wojcik chipped in with 14.

Heckert led the way in rebounds with 11 and had three assists. Morrison led in steals with four.

North Clay was led by Miah Ballard with 20 and Alexis VanDyke with 14. VanDyke connected on four three-pointers.

CHBC also claimed the junior varsity contest, 17-10. Macee Rodman and Karler Smith scored four each for the winners. Beccue led North Clay with five.

At Toledo

Cumberland had four players hit double digits in a 50-27 victory over Villa Grove Monday evening.

The Pirates stepped out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and led 26-10 at halftime. The Pirates had a 24-17 second half.

Katelyn Shoemaker and Sage Carr led the way for Cumberland with 12 points each while Abbie Becker and Zoe Mitchell scored 10 points each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo handled Wayne City by a 68-28 count Monday evening.

BSE ran off to a 26-8 opening quarter lead and led 41-13 at halftime. Three players hit the double digit mark. Laney Baldrige led the way with 20 points on nine field goals and two of two at the line. She also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Audrey Wilhour tallied 18 on seven field goals that included two three-pointers and was two of three at the line. Lexi Seabaugh chipped in with 14 on five field goals and four of six at the line.

At Newton

Newton edged Mount Carmel by a 34-33 count in overtime Monday evening.

The Eagles trailed Mount Carmel 14-5 after the opening quarter and 17-8 at halftime. Newton then came back with a 22-13 second half to tie the score, sending the contest into overtime. In the overtime period, Newton had a 4-3 edge.

Camryn Martin led the way for Newton with 10 points. Ava Kessler pulled down seven rebounds while C. Martin had six. Kessler led in assists with two. Martin and Kessler had five steals each.

Newton improved to 3-2 in the Little Illini Conference and 8-12 overall.

In junior varsity play, Newton claimed a 36-21 win. O'Dell led Newton with 10 points. The Eagles are 4-1 in the conference, 8-3 overall.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday at Paris in the Little Illini Conference Tournament against Olney at 7:30 p.m.

Dieterich edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Monday evening and finished out with a 44-29 National Trail Conference win.

The Movin' Maroons held a 21-15 halftime lead then had a 15-8 third quarter run. Kaitlyn Boerngen led the way with 17 points on six field goals that included five three-pointers, four coming in the third quarter.

WIndsor/Stew-Stras was led by Samantha Hayes with 11 and Ella Kinkelaar with 10.

Bethalto Civic Memorial edged Teutopolis 50-45 in Monday evening action.

Bethalto took a 12-8 opening quarter lead and led 23-16 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes came back with a 15-7 third period run to pull ahead 31-30 going into the final quarter.

But in the final period, Bethalto had a 20-14 run for the five-point win.

T-town was led by three players in double figures. Kaitlyn Schumacher and Kaylee Niebrugge scored 15 points each while Isabella Hardiek added 12.

Schumacher led in rebounds with 15 and had two steals. Niebrugge added nine boards and Zoe Cremens had two steals.
