Newton Plays For Third, T-town Vs. EHS For Fifth, St. A For Sixth at EHS/T-town Tourney

Newton will play for third place while Effingham and Teutopolis will meet for fifth place while Effingham St. Anthony will square off against Knoxville for seventh place at the Effingham/Teutopolis Boys Christmast Basketball Tournament today after competition Wednesday.

In the first game for a local squad Wednesday, St. Anthony fell to Lincoln Way East, 64-47.

Lincoln Way took a 22-16 first half lead and led 35-27 at halftime. Lincoln Way had a 29-20 second half.

St. Anthony was led by Kyle Stewart with 19 points with five three-pointers and four of four at the line.

Newton then edged Teutopolis 58-55. The Wooden Shoes took a 16-12 opening quarter lead as James NIebrugge scored six points and Max Niebrugge and Joey Ruholl knocked in a three-pointer each. Evan Schafer led the Eagles with six points.

T-town held a 32-27 halftime lead. Caleb Siemer hit a basket and was four of five at the line for six points for the Shoes.

But Newton was not out of the contest. The Eagles had a 17-14 third quarter to pull within 46-42 going into the final period. The Eagles continued on with a 15-9 final quarter to pull out the victory.

In the final quarter, Parker Wolf hit a basket and was four of four at the line for six points while Ben Meinhart hit a three-pointer plus Dylan Gier put in two baskets after not scoring in the contest and E. Schafer had a bucket.

Wolf finished with 17 for the winners while E. Schafer had 16 and Ben Meinhart 12.

T-town was led by M. Niebrugge with 18 while Siemer had 12 and James NIebrugge 10.

Chicago Brooks handed Effingham a 67-42 loss. Brooks took a 24-11 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Four players finished in double figures led by Anthony Vaval with 19.

Effingham was led by Jett Volpi with 10.

Teutopolis then handed St. Anthony a 49-41 loss. The Wooden Shoes trailed St. Anthony 9-6 after the opening quarter and 18-15 at halftime. T-town then had an 18-11 third quarter and continued on for the victory.

M. Niebrugge scored 14 while Siemer added 12 for the winners.

St. Anthony was led by Brock Fearday with 12 and Adam Rudibaugh and Max Koenig with 10 each.

Effingham then claimed a 48-46 win over Knoxville.

The Hearts edged out to a 13-9 opening quarter lead but Knoxville came back to take a 21-18 halftime lead. The Hearts then had a 30-25 second half charge.

Volpi led the way for Effingham with 19 points while Wolfe added 14 and Armando Estrada 11.

In today's games, St. Anthony will meet Knoxville at 1 p.m. for seventh place, T-town and Effingham square off at 3 p.m. for fifth place and Newton meets Oaklawn at 7:30 p.m. for third place.

Chicago Brooks faces Lincoln Way at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.
