WSS Wins Tri-County Tourney Crown, Altamont To Play For Third at S-V, T-town JV For Third At Vandalia

KANSAS -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School came out the champion of the Tri-County Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Hatchets captured a 60-55 win over Paris. WSS leaped out to a 21-8 opening quarter lead and led 33-23 at halftime.

Paris came back with a 13-10 third period to pull within 43-36 going into the final quarter and had a 19-17 final run only to fall short.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Samuel Vonderheide with 26 points on 10 field goals and six of 10 at the line. Also in double figures was Austin Wittenberg with 10 on two field goals that incuded one three-pointer and three of four at the line. Landon Miller chipped in with nine.

The Hatchets improved to 14-2 on the season. Named to the All-Tournament Team from WSS were Samuel Vonderheide, who earned Most Valuable Player honors, and Austin Wittenberg.

Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament

Sesser-Valier handed Altamont a 60-55 loss in overtime in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

Sesser-Valier edged out to a 13-12 opening quarter lead nailing three trifectas iin the quarter. Mason Robinson scored seven points while Noah Klimpel had six for the only two to score in the period.

Altamont trailed by only three points at halftime then pulled within two going into the final quarter. In the final period, the Indians had a 13-11 run to knot the score at 47-47 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Sesser-Valier went on a 13-8 run, scoring only one basket but putting in 11 free throws. Altamont's Klimpel and Jared Hammer scored a three-pointer each while Eric Kollman had a basket.

Klimpel finished with 20 points to lead the winners while Robinson added 14 and Hammer finished with nine.

In other games Wednesday, Christopher downed Cobden 67-51 in the winner bracket and will face Sesser-Valier at 7 p.m. today for the championship. Cobden dropped into the third place game to meet Altamont at 3 p.m.

Goreville won over Johnston City 65-55 and Marissa Coulterville defeated Red Bud 50-38. Goreville will meet Marissa Coulterville for fifth place at 1:30. In the consolation bracket, Sparta defeated New Athens 69-66 while Thompsonville won over Waltonville 58-41. Sparta and Thompsonville meet for the consolation championship at noon.

Vandalia Holiday Tournament

The Teutopolis junior varsity squad picked up two victories at the 49th Annual First National Bank Vandalia Holiday Tournament Wednesday.

The Wooden Shoes defeated host Vandalia 62-59 then won over Cumberland 50-45.

In the Cumberland contest, the Wooden Shoes took a 17-12 opening quarter lead as A. Bloemer and Thoele tallied five points each. T-town held a 26-18 halftime lead but lead by only three points going into the final period. The Shoes then went on a 17-14 run for the win.

Leading T-town was Pruemer with 13 points and Gaddis with nine.

T-town will now play for third place against Shelbyville. 

In other scores, Nokomis defeated Father McGivney 66-47, Shelbyville won over Nokomis 54-50, Meridian downed Okaw Valley 46-40 and Pana defeated Flora 50-40.

In today's games, Pana and Meridian meet for the championship at 6 p.m., Vandalia takes on Nokomis for fifth place at 3, Flora meets Cumberland for seventh at 1:30 and Okaw Valley takes on Father McGivney for ninth place at noon.
