EHS Downs St. A, Girls Area Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School handed Effingham St. Anthony a 49-34 loss in girls basketball competition Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs moved ahead 12-6 in the opening quarter as Riley Guy and Lucy Fearday scored four points each.

But the Hearts came back with an 11-5 second period run to knot the score at 17-17 at halftime. Meredith Schafer led the way for EHS with seven points on two baskets and three free throws. All of St. Anthony's five points came from Fearday, all from the free throw line.

The Hearts continued with a slight 11-9 third quarter edge to lead 28-26 going into the final period. EHS then broke loose with a 21-8 final period run.

In the final quarter, Schaefer scored seven and Saige Althoff added six after scoring seven in the third quarter.

Schaefer finished with 15 to lead the Hearts while Althoff finished with 13. Ella Niebrugge chipped in with nine.

The Bulldogs were led by Fearday with 16 points on four field goals and eight of 11 at the line. Guy tallied nine.

Effingham edged St. Anthony 31-2 in the junior varsity contest. Donaldson led the way for EHS with nine points. St. Anthony was led by Vonderheide with 12 and C. Rios with 10.

At Brownstown

Neoga came calling and picked up a 53-44 victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday evening.

BSE edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead but Neoga came back with a 16-12 second period to lead 24-23 at halftime. BSE took over with an 11-4 third period to move ahead 34-28 going into the final period. The Indians then went on a 25-10 run to pull out the victory.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Trista Moore and Sydney Richards led the way for Neoga with 14 points each while Avery Fearday added 11. Neoga improved to 4-0 in the NTC and is 9-2 overall. The Indians will travel to Newton Saturday.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Lexi Seabaugh with 15 points on five field goals and four of six at the line.

At Dieterich

Cumberland picked up a non-conference victory over Dieterich Thursday evening by a 56-44 tally.

The Pirates edged out to a 13-10 opening quarter lead behind Sage Carr's seven points. Kaitlyn Boerngen led the Movin' Maroons with six.

Dieterich came back to knot the score at halftime at 22-22 with a 12-9 second period. Four players scored in the quarter led by Ruby Westendorf and Boerngen with four each.

Cumberland's Zoe Mitchell got on track, connecting for two field goals and two free throws as the Pirates moved ahead with 10-6 third period.

The Pirates continued with their run, outscoring Dieterich 24-16 in the final period. Mitchell hit five field goals that included one three-pointer, and was two of two at the line for 13 of her team's points. Carr produced eight points.

Mitchell finished with 24 for the Pirates hitting eight field goals, one a three-pointer and was seven of 15 at the line. Carr tallied 15.

Dieterich was led by Boerngen with 19 on seven field goals, three of those trifectas and two of two at the line. Westendorf scored 10.

 At Altamont

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Altamont, 50-48 to remain unbeaten in the National Trail Conference Thursday evening.

The Bobcats stepped out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead and led 29-21 at halftime. But here came Altamont. The Indians had a 15-13 third quarter and almost pulled out the victory with a 12-8 final period only to fall two points short.

Lani Morrison led the CHBC attack with 23 points on 10 field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of five at the line. Gracie Heckert chipped in with 14. Ruby Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with 11 and Mady Wojcik added eight. Heckert and Morrison had three steals each. Stuckemeyer led in assists with three.

CHBC is 3-0 in the NTC and 10-1 overall.

Altamont was led by Grace Nelson with 27 on eight field goals, three of those trifectas and eight of nine at the line. Also in double figures was Peyton Osteen with 10.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC edged Altamont, 14-11. Kendyll Vaughn led CHBC with seven points. Altamont was led by Claire Boehm with six.
