Shoes Beat Hearts, St. A Down Newton, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Teutopolis in the annual battle between the two squads but the homecourt didn't offer the advantage this time around as the Wooden Shoes tallied a 46-37 boys basketball victory Tuesday evening.

The two teams played to an 8-8 opening quarter tie as the Hearts hit three of eight from the field and two of two at the line while T-town connected on three of 12, two of those three-pointers.

The Wooden Shoes then edged ahead with a 14-10 second period to lead 22-18 at halftime. Dylan Pruemer connected on two three-pointers in the quarter. The Hearts had three-pointers from Jett Volpi and Andrew Splechter.

The third quarter was the turning point. The Hearts put up only seven shots while T-town inundated the basket with 16 shots, connecting on five and were three of three at the line. Kayden Althoff and Mitch Althoff hit a three-pointer each while Caleb Siemer hit two baskets and three of three at the line for seven points.

Although the Hearts came back in the final period with a 15-9 run, it was too little, too late. Volpi hit four baskets, two of those three-pointers for 10 points.

T-town had one player in double figures, Siemer with 14 on five of 12 from the field, four of five from three-point range and four of five at the line. M. Althoff had seven and three other players had six each.

Effingham was led by Volpi with 18 points on seven field goals, three of those trifectas, and had one free throw.

EHS had 14 turnovers to 10 for the Shoes who improve to 7-1 on the season.

The Hearts dropped to 2-6.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony had Newton's number from the start and finished the evening with a 54-42 non-conference victory Tuesday.

The Bulldogs ripped off to a 19-7 opening quarter lead behind the six points from Griffin Sehy and Craig Croy. Max Koenig chipped in with five.

The Eagles came back with an 11-6 second period to pull wthin 25-18 at hafltime. But the Bulldogs got back on track with a 13-8 third period.

Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Croy led the way with 14 points on five field goals that included a three-pointer and three of four at the line. Kyle Stewart added 13 points, 11 coming in the second half on four field goals and five of eight at the line. Sehy added 10 points.

Newton was led by Ben Meinhart with 23 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and 10 of 14 at the line. Evan Schafer added 10 points. The Eagles improved to 7-2.

The Bulldogs claimed the junior varsity game, 58-51. Brock Fearday led with 21 points while Michael Martelli had 12 and Will Hoene 10 for the Bulldogs. Newton was led by Parker Wolf with 24.

At Carlyle

Carlyle played host to Atlamont and sent the Indians home with a 52-44 non-conference loss Tuesday evening.

Carlyle edged out to a 10-7 opening quarter lead then had a 16-10 second period to lead 26-17 at halftime. The two teams played to a 7-7 third period tie. Altamont came back with a 20-19 final period but it wasn't enough.

Carlyle had two players in double figures, Hoffman with 20 and Nothaus with 14.

Altamont was led by Mason Robinson with 16 points while Noah Klimpel added nine.

The Indians drop to 4-2 on the season.

In the junior varsity game, Altamont was a 63-33 winner. Leading Altamont were Avery Jahraus with 19, Wyatt Phillips with 11 and Keinon Eirhart with 10.

At Casey

Neoga edged Casey-Westfield, 42-41 in Tuesday evening competition.

The Indians took a 9-7 opening quarter lead as Quintin Richards scored two baskets and two free throws for six of those points.

Casey-Westfield came back with an 8-4 second period to lead 15-13 at halftime.

Neoga then had a 13-8 third period edge to move ahead 26-23. Paci McClure connected on a three-pointer and a free throw while Richards hit a trifecta and Dontye Perry had four points.

In the final quarter, Casey-Westfield came back with an 18-16 run but fell a point short.

The Indians connected on their free throws with eight of 13 and McClure hit two three-pointers and tallied 12 in the period.

McClure finished with 16 to lead the winners while Perry and Richards added nine each.

Casey-Westfield was led by J. Parcell with 17 and R. Overbeck with 11.
