EHS, BSE Nab Victories, CHBC Falls In Girls Basketball

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School ran off to a 22-5 opening quarter lead and that was the game as the Hearts finished off Charleston 58-10 in Apollo Conference girls basketball competition Tuesday evening. It was the eighth victory of the season for the Hearts.

Six players scored as the Hearts took the early lead and pushed ahead 51-8 at halftime. The Hearts had a 16-0 third period.

Nine players finished with points for EHS. Leading the way were Sawyer Althoff and Saige Althoff with 10 points each. Sawyer hit three field goals and was four of five at the line while Saige connected on four field goals that included two three-pointers.

Charleston was led by Ellie Long with five points.

At Casey

Brownstown/St. Elmo handed Casey-Westfield a 59-23 non-conference loss in Tuesday evening action.

BSE ran out to a 14-4 opening quarter lead as Audrey Wilhour knocked in four baskets for eight points. In the second quarter, BSE had a 12-8 run to lead 26-12 at halftime. Laney Baldrige hit three baskets.

A. Wilhour came to life again in the third quarter with two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight while Baldrige also had eight points and Anna Stine six in a 22-2 run for a 48-14 lead.

Wilhour ended with 16 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, while Baldrige added 14 points on six field goals and two of six at the line.

At Casey

At Vandalia

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell to Vandalia in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening, 62-40.

The Vandals had a 20-9 second period that jumped them to a 37-20 halftime lead.

Four players hit double figures for the Vandals and that included Eckhardt with 20, Satterwaite with 14 and Me. Lupton and Austin with 10 each.

CHBC was led by Gracie Heckert with 21 points on six field goals that included two three-pointers and seven of 10 at the line.

Lani Morrison led in rebounds with seven and had three steals. Mady Wojcik also had three steals.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC was a 39-23 winner. Macee Rodman led CHBC with 16 points.
