Mattoon Knocks Lady Hearts from Unbeaten Ranks; Other Thursday Scores

Mattoon rolled to a 24-4 first quarter advantage and never looked back in handing the Effingham Lady Hearts their first loss of the season 59-35. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Mattoon shot 56% from the field, making 23 of 41 including three of seven threes. Effingham was held to 33% shooting, 14 of 42 including one of 10 on threes. The Hearts made six of 10 from the line, claimed 18 rebounds, and turned the ball over 17 times. Mattoon claimed 23 rebounds and committed 14 turnovers while making 10 of 19 foul shots.

The Althoff sisters, Sawyer and Saige, each scored six points to lead Effingham, now 7-1 on the season. Also for Effingham: Meredith Schaefer 5, Madison Mapes 5, Marissa Allie 4, Ella Niebrugge 3, and Oliva Moser, Coralin Ohnesorge and Sidney Donaldson, 2 apiece. 

The game was marked by Mattoon's Mallory Ramage becoming the all-time career scoring leader in Mattoon girls basketball history. She has passed the previous record of 1,790 points set by Jody Sanders in 1993. Mattoon improved to 6-1 on the season.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged St. Anthony 51-50 in a doozy of a ballgame Thursday. 

St. Anthony held a 15-9 lead after one quarter, and led 24-19 at halftime. It was 38-32 Bulldogs after three quarters, but the Bobcats outscored the Bulldogs 19-12 in the final quarter to win by one.

Gracie Heckert led CHBC with 20 points, while Marissa Summers and Ruby Stuckemeyer each scored 10 points. Lani Morrison added nine points and Madison Wojcik scored two points for the Bobcats, who are still unbeaten on the season at 9-0 and are now 2-0 in National Trail Conference play.

Riley Guy had her second big game of the week for St. Anthony, scoring 26 points. Lucy Fearday scored nine, Abby Hatten seven, Stacie Vonderheide four, Anna Faber three, and Grace Karolewicz one. 

St. Anthony is now 7-3 on the season with their first NTC loss of the campaign.

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes posted a 48-35 win over St. Joe-Ogden Thursday night.

The Lady Shoes led at all the stops; 14-9 after one quarter, 30-13 at halftime, and 37-23 after three periods.

Kaitlyn Schumacher led Teutopolis with 12 points, while Kaylee Niebrugge scored 11 points and Emily Konkel with 10. Also for T-Town: Zoe Cremens 7, Isabella Hardiek 4, and Grace Tegeler and Joleen Deters 2 apiece. Konkel and Niebrugge each grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Lady Shoes in that category.

Neoga improved to 8-2 on the season with a 52-36 win over OPH at Neoga.

Neoga was up 13-6 after one quarter, 32-24 at halftime, and 42-33 after three periods before outscoring OPH 10-3 in the final stanza. 

Sydney Richards led Neoga with 22 points, while Avery Fearday added 12 points. Also for Neoga: Moore 8, Worman and Hakman 4 each, and Eaton 2. Richards not only led Neoga in scoring, she had six assists, eight rebounds, six steals and five blocked shots. Fearday had six assists and eight steals. 

Neoga won the JV game 49-26.
