NEWTON -- Newton High School went overtime before edging Altamont, 43-40 in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The Eagles held a 10-5 opening quarter lead and led 20-17 at halftime. Altamont came roaring back with a 12-5 third period to move ahead 29-25. In the final quarter, Altamont held a five point lead with 15 seconds remaining. Newton banked in a three-pointer with 11 seconds on the clock. Altamont missed at the free throw line. Newton threw up a three-point attempt with four seconds showing. The Eagles got the rebound and hit a layup sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period Newton had a 5-2 run to pull out the victory.

The Eagles had three players in double figures. Mason Schafer led the way with 14 points while Evan Schafer added 12 and Ben Meinhart 10. The Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season and return to action Friday at North Clay (Louisville).

Altamont had only one player in double figures, Noah Klimpel with 10.

Altamont claimed the junior varsity game in double overtime, 72-69.

At Paris

Teutopolis came back from a 32-30 halftime deficit to pick up a 50-45 win over Paris Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Paris 18-9 after the opening quarter and 24-21 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes then went on a tear with a 15-9 third quarter as the Shoes connected on seven of nine free throws in the quarter. T-town continued their hot scoring from the free throw line with six of eight in the final period and claimed the five point victory.

The Shoes connected on 13 of 17 free throws. Leading the way was Max Niebrugge with two field goals and seven of eight at the line for 11 points while Dylan Pruemer hit four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of two at the line, also for 11 points. Caleb Siemer chipped in with 10 points on four field goals and two of two at the line.

 At Dieterich

Neoga edged Dieterich 35-33 as two National Trail Conference teams met in Tuesday evening play.

The Movin' Maroons held a 7-5 opening quarter lead and held that same margin at halftime, 16-14. The Maroons held on to the two-point lead in the third period as both teams scored nine.

In the final quarter, Neoga's Paci McClure knocked in a three-pointer while Kaden Young hit a two-pointer and two free throws while Dontye Perry connected on four of six free throws and the Indians pulled out a 35-33 win.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) handed St. Elmo/Brownstown its second loss of the season with a 51-37 victory Tuesday.

The Cardinals took a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 31-22 at halftime. North Clay had a 14-3 third period.

Logan Fleener led the Cardinals with 19 points while Bryton Griffy added 12. Fleener pulled down 11 rebounds. Collyn Ballard led in assists with three.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Brady Maxey with 10 points. Gavyn Smith had eight rebounds while Adam Atwood had three assists. Caleb Campbell led in steals with three and had two blocked shots.

SEB drops to 1-2 in the National Trail Conference and 6-2 overall.

St. Elmo/Brownstown nabbed the junior varsity contest, 55-25. The Eagles were led by Schaub with 11. North Clay was led by Jesse Weidner with 12.

At Arcola

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had a big-scoring second quarter to get on track on the way to a 58-33 non-conference win over Arcola Tuesday.

The two teams scored 14 each in the opening quarter before WSS moved ahead 25-17 at halftime. WSS continued the run with a 20-9 third period and outscored Arcola 13-7 in the final quarter.

Austin Wittenberg led the way for the winners with 18 points while Jordan Wittenberg added 11 and Samuel Vonderheide 10. The Hatchets improved to 5-2 on the season.

WSS is back in action Friday at Shelbyville. Arcola dropped to 2-2.

Cumberland handed Casey-Westfield a 50-43 loss in Tuesday evening action.

The Pirates trailed Casey-Westfield 15-14 after one period and 25-23 at halftime. Cumberland then had a 15-7 third period surge as Elijah McElravy found the range, scoring three baskets including a three-pointer and two of two at the line for nine points. Cumberland then held off the Warriors 12-11 in the final period for the seven-point victory.

Cumberland had two players in double figures. Gavin Hendrix led the way with 14 while McElravy tallied 13.

Vandalia played host to South Central in non-conference action and edged out the Cougars, 61-57 Tuesday.

The Vandals held a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 28-22 at halftime. South Central clawed back with a 22-15 third period surge to move ahead 44-43. But Vandalia got back on track and claimed the win.

South Central was led in scoring by Aidan Dodson with 25 points on 11 field goals, three of those from three-point range. Spencer Johannes chipped in with 14.
