Effingham Junior High School moved into the championship game of the Class 7-4A Girls Basketball Regional with a victory Saturday.

In the opening two games, Mattoon won over Charleston, 24-15 and Mount Zion trounced Stephen Decatur, 34-3.

In the second round, top-seeded Taylorville beat Mattoon, 39-7 and Effingham was a 29-21 winner over Mount Zion.

Effingham moved ahead 8-2 but held only a three-point lead at halftime. The Mustangs then had a 16-1 second half for the victory.

The Mustangs were led by Scouten with 11 points. In even scoring, Weis, Kirk, McBride and Wendling had four points each.

Second-seeded Effingham and top-seeded Taylorville meet for the regional championship at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner heads to the Taylorville Sectional Dec. 1.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Effingham St. Anthony edged North Clay (Louisville), 35-20 in the Teutopolis Regional Saturday.

The Bullpups zipped out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead and had a 16-4 halftime lead. North Clay came back with a 19-16 second half but fell short.

Aubrey Denning led the way for St. Anthony with 11 points while Addie Lauritzen and Gianna Frisbie tallied sixth each.

North Clay was led by Zink with seven points.

In the other games, Dieterich blanked Oblong, 23-0 and Edwards County (Albion) trounced Palestine/Hutsonville, 37-2.

St. Anthony will now meet top-seeded Teutopolis today at 6 p.m. while third-seeded Dieterich takes on second-seeded Edwards County at 7:15.

The winners meet for the regional championship Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Class 1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

Martinsville picked up an opening round victory in the Class 1A Sacred Heart Regional Saturday.

Martinsville defeated Neoga, 31-10.

Martinsville advances to take on top-seeded Sigel St. Michael at 6:15 p.m. today followed by second-seeded Oakland Lake Crest against No. 3 Effingham Sacred Heart at 7:30.

The winners advance to the championship game Wednesday.

 

Class 3A Paris Mayo Regional

Jasper County, seeded fourth, moved into second round play at the Paris Mayo Regional with a win Saturday.

Jasper County edged Marshall, 17-13 in the lone contest. Jasper County now faces top-seeded Paris Mayo at 6 p.m. today followed by second-seeded Robinson Nuttall against third-seeded Cumberland at 7:30.

The winners advance to the title contest Tuesday.

 

Class 2A Brownstown/St. Elmo Regional

This regional gets underway tonight with one contest.

Fourth-seeded Altamont will take on fifth-seeded South Central at 6:15 p.m.

The winner advances to second round play Tuesday.
