T-town Opens Tourney With Win, St. A, BSE, Altamont, C'land, CHBC, S. Central Victorious

SALEM -- Teutopolis High School opened competition in the Salem Girls Basketball Tournament with a resounding victory Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes handily defeated the host squad, 71-31. The Shoes ripped out to a 21-2 opening quarter lead as Emily Konkel scored six, Zoe Cremens five and Kaitlyn Schumacher four in even scoring.

T-town continued its barrage with a 19-8 second period to lead 40-10 at halftime. This time around, Isabella Hardiek scored six and Kaylee Niebrugge and Katie Kremer added five each.

The Shoes finished with two players in double figures. Konkel led the way with 15 while Hardiek added 10. Kremer finished with nine and Schumacher and Courtney Gibson had eight each.

Schumacher pulled down nine rebounds and had four steals. Cremens, Hardiek and Niebrugge had two assists each. Konkel and Gibson had a block each.

In the other contest Thursday, Highland edged Carterville, 44-43.

 The tournament continues today with Salem against Centralia at 6 p.m.

Teutopolis will be back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. against Highland. Centralia faces Highland at noon, Salem takes on Carterville at 1:30 and Carterville faces Cetnralia at 5:30.

The tournament doesn't end until Saturday, November 27.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony tallied both junior varsity and varsity wins over Sandoval Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead in the varsity game and never looked back in a 62-27 victory.

Riley Guy scored nine points while Lucy Fearday had eight in the opening quarter run. Guy tallied six more for 15 by halftime and Fearday had 10.

In the third period, Anna Faber came to the front with seven points as the Bulldogs moved ahead 54-20.

Guy finished with 22 points, connecting on nine field goals that included a three-pointer, and was three of four at the line. Fearday scored 14 on five field goals and four of eight at the line.

 At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo handed Litchfield a 32-27 loss in varsity competition Thursday evening.

The Bombers edged out to a 9-2 opening quarter lead and led 16-6 at halftime. Litchfield came back with a 13-9 third period to pull within 25-19 and had an 8-7 final quarter but BSE held on for the win.

Laney Baldrige tallied 10 points for the winners while Audrey Wilhour chipped in with nine. Baldrige led in steals with four and had three assists. Natelly Beall led in rebounds with six. The Bombers had 14 steals in the game led by Baldrige and Audrey Wilhour and Anna Stine with three each.

In the junior varsity game, BSE also claimed a five-point win, 41-36 over Greenville's freshman/sophomore team. Leading the way was Jayna Ireland with 20 points.

Altamont took a 26-11 first half lead and went on for a 61-30 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Thursday evening.

The Indians put up a three-point barrage in the opening quarter with four. Grace Nelson had two of those and finished with 10 points in the period while Peyton Osteen connected on two.

Nelson went on to finish with 37 points on 13 field goals and nine of 13 at the line. Also in double figures was P. Osteen with 15 on four field goals and five of six at the line.

The Hatchets were led by Morgan Mathis with 10 and Ella Kinkelaar with nine.

In the junior varsity contest, Altamont was a 27-19 winner.

Cumberland came out a 59-42 winner in Thursday evening action.

The Pirates ran off to a 19-6 opening quarter lead and held a 32-20 halftime tally. The Pirates led 50-30 going into the final period.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Zoe Mitchell tallied 18 while Abbie Becker chipped in with 11 and Jadalyn Sowers scored 10.

Edwards County had 16 field goals that included 10 three-pointers. Lexi McKinney connected on five and finished with 17 points.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City broke a 7-7 opening quarter tie to lead 19-18 at halftime then had a 24-6 second half for a 43-24 win over Moweaqua Central A&M Thursday.

Two players hit double figures for the winners as Lani Morrison tallied 12 and Gracie Heckert 11. Madison Wojcik and Ruby Stuckemeyer chipped in with eight each.

Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with 10 while Heckert pulled down eight. Heckert and Morrison led in steals with four each. Marissa Summers had three assists.

Burgener scored 20 of Central A&M's 24 points.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC was a 29-15 winner. Karlee Smith led the way with 10 points. CHBC is 2-0 in both junior varsity and varsity play.

With a 13-3 second period, South Central ran off to a 22-9 opening half and went on to beat North Clay (Louisville), 50-36 Thursday.

The Cougars connected on 17 field goals that included one three-pointer and was 13 of 19 at the line. Halle Smith led the way with 20 points on seven field goals and six of seven at the line while Brooklyn Garrett added 15 on six field goals that included a three-pointer and two of four at the line.

North Clay was led by Miah Ballard with 17 points on six field goals and five of eight at the line.

The Maroons took a 22-10 halftime lead then had a 16-9 third period run. List led the way for Robinson with 20 points while Shea chipped in with 12.

Newton was led by Elle Bennett with seven points and two assists. Alexis Hetzer led the team in rebounds with six. Amber Russell had two steals.

The Eagles claimed the junior varsity contest, 39-26. Macy Barthelemy tallied 11 to lead the winners.
