Effingham St. Anthony and Vandalia split junior high girls basketball victories Saturday.

Vandalia edged the Bullpups, 22-20 in the seventh-grade contest. Vandalia held a 12-6 halftime lead. St. Anthony pulled within 14-12 going into the final quarter but couldn't get that last basket.

Frisbie and Denning tallied six each for the Bullpups.

In the eighth-grade contest, St. Anthony was a 35-29 winner in double overtime.

St. Anthony held a 13-10 halftime lead and led by one going into the final quarter. The two teams were tied at 23-23 sending the contest into overtime.

Both teams scored a basket in the first overtime. Then St. Anthony went on a 10-4 run in the second overtime period for the win.

Nuxoll scored 19 to lead St. Anthony.

At Louisville

Stewardson-Strasburg picked up opening wins over North Clay (Louisville) as the girls basketball season got underway Saturday.

Stew-Stras won the seventh-grade game, 27-19 holding North Clay scoreless in the third period after leading by only a point at halftime.

Friese scored 17 for the winners. Roysey led North Clay with six.

In eighth-grade action, Stew-Stras won 26-18. Stew-Stras held a 14-10 halftime lead.

S. Hayes led the way with 14 points. North Clay was led by Wetherholt and Price with six each.

Stew-Stras hosts Effingham Sacred Heart today at 5 p.m.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City split wins with Shelbvyille in Saturday play.

Shelbyville claimed the seventh-grade game, 34-18. Shelbyville held a 16-9 halftime lead and had an 18-9 second half.

CHBC was led by Haley Doty with six points.

In the eighth-grade contest, CHBC was a 30-20 winner. CHBC stepped out to a 16-4 opening half lead and held on for the win.

Macee Rodman led the winners with 14 points.

At Cowden
