STRASBURG -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg stepped out to a 20-7 opening quarter lead and handed Effingham St. Anthony a 58-36 girls high school basketball loss as the two National Trail Conference teams met Monday evening.

 

The Hatchets' Mikala Nichols connected on four baskets and two free throws for 10 points in the quarter while teammate Hannah Hayes had two baskets and was four of four at the line for eight points.

WSS then had a 13-9 second period to lead 33-16 at halftime. The lead went to 50-25 after the third period as Nichols continued her hot scoring with three more baskets and two free throws for eight while Ella Kinkelaar tallied seven.

Three players finished in double figures for the Hatchets. Nichols tallied 20 on eight field goals and four of four at the free throw line while Hayes had four field goals and five of seven at the line for 13. Kinkelaar hit five field goals that included a three-pointer and was one of one at the line for 12.

St. Anthony was led by Riley Guy and Lucy Fearday with nine points each.

At Cowden

Neoga High School continued its amazing season with a 52-42 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Monday.

The Indians ran out to a 36-13 halftime lead. CHBC came back with an 18-6 third quarter run to pull within 42-31 and had an 11-10 final period but couldn't get over the hump.

Two players hit double digits for Neoga. Sydney Richards led the way with 16 points while Avery Fearday chipped in with 12. Richards pulled down six rebounds. Trista Moore had six boards and six steals. Fearday finished with six steals.

The Indians are now 9-0 on the season and will host Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Wednesday for Senior Night festivities.

The Bobcats were led by Mackenzie Bunch with 16 points. Sydney Lorton had eight rebounds and Gracie Heckert seven. Lorton led in steals with four. Heckert, Carsen Burks and Lani Morrison had three assists each. CHBC drops to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in the National Trail Conference.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC was a 36-28 winner. Madison Wojcik led with nine points.

At Cowden

At Louisville

Altamont edged North Clay (Louisville), 49-46 in action Monday evening.

The Cardinals stepped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead on Altamont as Madison Lovett scored eight points and Alexis VanDyke connected on a three-pointer. But Altamont rallied to pull within 29-26 at halftime.

The Indians had four players score in the second quarter as Gracie Nelson, who was held to one basket in the first period, hit four baskets and a free throw for nine points.

But North Clay came back with a 9-6 third period to lead 38-32 going into the final quarter. Allison Czyzewski had two baskets in that third quarter.

Nelson then went to work for the Indians with three baskets and three free throws for nine points while R. Miller had four points and Taylor Mette chipped in with three and the Indans pulled out the three-point win.

Nelson finished with 22 points for the winners while Mette added 10.

North Clay was led by Lovett and VanDyke with 11 each. VanDyke had three trifectas.

At Louisville

At Teutopolis

Three players hit double figures for Teutopolis as the Wooden Shoes handed Lincoln a 66-47 loss in Monday evening action.

T-town edged out to a 16-12 opening quarter lead as Lexi Niebrugge knocked in two three-pointers and Kaitlyn Schumacher scored six. The Shoes held a 33-20 halftime lead and moved that to 54-36 going into the final quarter.

Niebrugge finished with 20 points for the Shoes connecting on a whopping six three-pointers with a regular basket in the contest. The Shoes were on fire from three-point range as Zoe Cremens added four for 12 points and the Shoes had 10 for the game. Also in double figures was Schumacher with 11 on five baskets and a free throw.

Lincoln was led by Kloe Froebe with 31 points. She hit eight field goals and was 15 of 19 at the line.

The Shoes had nine steals in the contest led by L. Niebrugge, Schumacher and Kaylee Niebrugge with two each. L. Nierugge had four assists.

South Central had a big second quarter in downing Dieterich, 62-36 Monday evening.

The Cougars held a five-point lead in the opening quarter but came back with a 24-7 run to lead 42-20 at halftime. Laney Webster scored nine of the 18 first quarter points for South Central.

Taegan Webster then went to work for the Cougars with nine points on four field goals that included a three-pointer. Brooklyn Garrett and Sydnee Garrett had a three-pointer each.

L. Webster led the way for the Cougars with 19 points while T. Webster and Garrett tallied 11 points each.

Dieterich was led by Emily Bloemer and Madilyn Brummer with eight points each.

South Central also claimed the junior varsity contest, 48-44. T. Webster led with 15 points and H. Smith added 12. Dieterich was led by Kaitlyn Boerngen with 21.

Brownstown/St. Elmo tallied a 57-23 victory over Ramsey Monday evening.

BSE took a 12-7 opening quarter lead as Olivia Campbell connected on two three-pointers. The Bombers held a 24-12 halftime lead.

BSE then went on a 25-11 third quarter run to lead 49-23 going into the final period.

Audrey Wilhour led the way as three playres finished in double figures for BSE. Wilhour scored 14 points while Jayna Ireland chipped in with 11 and Campbell added 10.

Campbell pulled down seven rebounds while Natally Beal and Laney Baldrige had six each. Campbell had six assists. Audrey Wilhour led in steals with five.

In junior varsity action, BSE claimed a 31-15 victory. BSE was led by L. Seabaugh with 14 points.

At Brownstown

Newton traveled to Lawrenceville and picked up a 37-29 victory Monday.

The Eagles held a 21-16 halftime lead and had a 16-13 second half.

Whitney Zumbahlen led the way for Newton with 17 points on five field goals, that included a three-pointer, and six of 11 at the line. Ava Kessler chipped in with nine points.

Amber Russell had six rebounds while Zumbahlen had five. Shaley Murray and Allison Einhorn led in assists with two each. Zumbahlen had three blocked shots. Russell had three steals.

Newton improves to 5-3 on the season and will travel to Flora Thursday.
