Effingham Wins Over Teutopolis in Boys Hoops; Other Tuesday Scores

The Effingham Hearts led start-to-finish, defeating the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes 68-54 Tuesday night at Effingham High School. The contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham finished hitting 50% from the field, making 23 of 46 shots, including 8 of 19 threes. The Hearts made 15 of 22 free throws, turned the ball over 11 times, and grabbed 23 rebounds.

Teutopolis made 19 of 50 shots for 38%, including 7 of 23 threes. The Shoes made 9 of 12 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and committed 18 turnovers.

Effingham held a 17-10 lead after one quarter, but the Shoes were within 34-29 at halftime. The Hearts outscored the Shoes 20-12 in the third period to lead 54-41 and pushed the advantage to as much as 17 points.

Nate Thompson led Effingham and all scorers with 25 points on 10 of 15 shooting, while also making 4 of 5 foul shots and grabbing 8 rebounds. Parker Wolfe scored 15 points including 7 of 8 from the foul line with five rebounds and three assists. Jacob Stoneburner was also in double figures with 11 points, including three threes, Garrett Wolfe scored nine points, Dalton Fox six points, and Max Hardiek two points.

Evan Wermert led Teutopolis with 18 points while Jordan Hardiek scored 11 points and Evan Addis scored 10. Also for the Shoes: Max Niebrugge 6, Joey Ruholl 3, and Matthew Deters, Jack Poelker and Caleb Siemer 2 each.

Effingham is now 5-0 on the young season, while Teutopolis is even at 2-2.

Teutopolis won the JV game 53-43. Sam Bushur led Teutopolis with 11 points, while Max Hardiek led Effingham with 11.

Altamont 41, St. Anthony 38 (Both teams were scheduled to play other opponents; when those schools canceled due to their "no school, no play" rules, St. Anthony and Altamont decided to play each other. Altamont and St. Anthony were tied 7-7 after one quarter, but Altamont outscored the Bulldogs 11-6 in the second quarter to lead 18-13 at halftime and held a 26-24 lead after three quarters. A 15-14 fourth quarter edge gave Altamont the three-point win. Kaden Eirhart's 17 points led Altamont. Also for the Indians: Noah Klimpel 6, Jerod Ruholl 6, Brennyn Abendroth 5, Taylor Robbins 4, Derrick Budde 2, and Jared Hammer 1. Kennan Walsh led St. Anthony with 12 points. Dieterich 41, Neoga 30 (Dieterich led 11-5 after one quarter, 16-13 at halftime, 26-24 after three quarters, and then outscored Neoga 15-6 in the final quarter to win by 11. For Dieterich, Pete Britton led scorers with 16 points. St. Elmo/Brownstown 60, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 50 (CHBC held a 14-12 lead after one quarter and led 27-26 at halftime, but SEB poured in 20 third quarter points to lead 46-40 heading for the fourth quarter and outscored the Bobcats 14-10 in the final quarter to post the 10-point win. SEB shot 47% from the field. For SEB, Gavyn Smith led the way with 22 points. Also in double figures were Ean Forbus with 14 points and Brady Maxey with 13. Newton 50, Paris 49 (in a nail-biter, Newton posted the one-point win. Paris led 13-8 after one quarter but Newton held the Tigers to four points in the second period to lead 18-17 at halftime. It was 37-33 Newton after three quarters and even though Paris outscored Newton 16-13 in the final quarter, the Eagles prevailed. Aaron Einhorn led Newton with 13 points and Evan Schafer scored 10. Also for the Eagles: Mason Schafer 8, Leo Weber 8, Mitchell Zumbahlen 7, Ben Meinhart 4; Brenneman with 21 points led the Tigers)

Cumberland 66, Argenta-Oreana 17 (The Pirates led 17-5 after one quarter and never looked back. Brennyn Cutts led Cumberland with 30 points and scored his 1000th career point during the contest. Teutopolis 70, St. Anthony 27 (the Lady Shoes won over both city schools this week, defeating Effingham Monday night and St. Anthony Tuesday night; T-Town was up 22-9 after one quarter, 36-15 at halftime, and 56-22 after three quarters; Lexie Niebrugge led Teutopolis with 16 points and Isabella Hardiek and Kaylee Niebrugge with 11 each, Zoe Cremens 8, Kaitlyn Schumacher 8, Emily Konkel 6, Katie Kremer 4, Grace Tegeler 3, Courtney Gibson 2, Summer Wall 1.
