Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Named Top Team In District Five of IBCA All-Academic.

The Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School girls basketball team was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Academic State Team.

The Hatchets had the best grade point average in Division 5. The IBCA decided to honor all-academic teams for the first time this year in boys and girls basketball. Newton was also listed among the 23 schools in Division 5. Newton was 16th.

"I think the GPA is a great representation of the work ethic and competitive nature that our girls have," said WSS girls head coach Craig Moffett. "They are smart, but more than that they communicate well with adults and strive for excellence instead of settling for a lower grade.

"This team was extremely fun to coach for those reasons. Along with that, the parent support was outstanding and that is also a factor in their academic success."

The Eages of Newton also placed on the boys team in Division 5 and was the top team out of 13 teams.

The IBCA awards are a competition among schools within each of their Illinois High School Association Legislative Districts. The state of Illinois has seven legislative districts. The IBCA will award the Top Three schools with the highest G.P.A. from each Legislative District for both boys’ and girls’ basketball.  The basketball team with the highest G.P.A. in each Legislative District will be presented a plaque at the Coach’s Clinic in September.  The second and third place teams will receive a certificate in the mail from the IBCA in recognition of the team accomplishment. All schools meeting the minimum 3.0 will be listed on the IBCA website in recognition of their achievement.

The IBCA felt that the inception of the Award would send a clear message that they want to go beyond athletic accomplishments in recognizing the abilities of their incredible student-athletes in the state. They believe the Academic All-State Team Award is a proper recognition of the pursuits of educational success engrained in the schools and students of Illinois. They want all to know how much they value the efforts in the classroom above the efforts on the hardwood.
