EHS Falls to Mount Vernon, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School trailed Mount Vernon 16-3 after the opening quarter, rallied back to tie the game before falling 69-63 in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The Rams stepped out to the big opening quarter lead and held a 33-23 halftime tally. The Hearts roared back on 12 points by Parker Wolfe in the third period to trail by nine.

Then in the final period, EHS tied the score with 30 seconds remaining but ended up with the loss.

P. Wolfe led the way for EHS with 28 points, scoring 21 in the second half. Drew Thompson scored 23 on six three-pointers and five of six at the line.

In the junior varsity contest, the Hearts fell 68-63. Max Woelfer led the way with 20 while Jett Volpi had 19 and Max Hardiek 10.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis had to go into overtime before downing Mattoon, 61-51 in action Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 26-24 at halftime. Both teams scored 16 in the third period. The Green Wave then had a 9-7 final quarter to tie the score at 49-49. In the OT period, T-town took charge with a 12-2 run.

"Mattoon played a great game and their zone gave us fits at times," said T-town Coach Chet Reeder. "We were way too careless with the ball and turned that into 16 turnovers. Evan Wermert took the game over on offense and our rebounding helped us get a win against a very tough Mattoon team."

Wermert led the Shoes with 28 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Hardiek had five assists and three steals. The Wooden Shoes are now 20-9 on the season and will play their final regular season game at Woodlawn Friday.

South Central ran out to a 23-9 opening quarter lead on Oblong in non-conference action Tuesday and went on for a 74-49 victory.

Four players hit double figures for the Cougars. Leading the way was Hunter Brandt with 22 while Collin Miller added 19. Chase Dodson chipped in with 14 and Keenin Willshire tallied 11.

South Central improved to 17-10 overall and will play host to North Clay (Louisville) Friday in National Trail Conference play.

At Ramsey

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took a big opening quarter lead and claimed a 60-44 non-conference win over Ramsey Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets led 35-19 at halftime. Gavan Wernsing led the way in scoring with 23 points, connecting on three trifectas in the contest. Samuel Vonderheide added 15 while Jordan Wittenberg finished with 10.

WSS is now 13-16 on the season. Ramsey dropped to 9-18.

Ramsey was a winner in the junior varsity contest, 37-31.

WSS will be back in action Friday at Altamont.

Traiilng 40-37 at halftime, St. Elmo/Brownstown rallied in the third period with a 25-13 run and went on for an 80-73 non-conference win over Odin Tuesday.

The Eagles hit 50 percent from the field and were 38 percent at the line. Jaxon Tish led five players in double figures witrh 18. Andy Goldsborough and Jace McWhorter scored 16 each while Bryton Pruett added 14 and Gavyn Smith 11.

Goldsborough pulled down 11 rebounds while Jacob Baron had six. Pruett led in assists with five and Smith had four. Goldsborough and McWhorter had two steals each. Baron had a blocked shot.

SEB dropped to 18-12 on the season.

Neoga took the early lead but couldn't hold on, falling to Tuscola, 49-33 in Tuesday evening action.

The Indians led 12-8 after the opening period but fell behind 24-17 at halftime and could never get back on track.

Trevor Roy scored 13 while Paci McClure added 11 for the Indians.

Okaw Valley went on a 23-5 final quarter run as Sharp connected on eight points while Rory had five and Okaw Valley hit seven of nine free throws in the quarter.

Cumberland was led by Ross Hemmen with 15 points, Wyatt Napier with 12 and Brennyn Cutts with 12.
