ESL Defeats EHS to Win Salem Tourney Title; Carbondale Downs T-town for Third

For the second straight season, the East St. Louis Flyers are the champions of the Salem Invitational Tournament. The Flyers won the 69th annual tourney with a 61-42 victory over the Effingham Flaming Hearts.

The Carbondale Terriers took third place honors, downing the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes, 65-45.

Both games were heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

In other games Saturday, Mount Vernon won over Salem 50-47 for the consolation championship and Thornton Fractional North downed Highland 60-43 for seventh place.

EAST ST. LOUIS 61, EFFINGHAM 42

The Hearts held the early lead in this game and were still up 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. East St. Louis, though, started to gradually pull away, leading 29-21 at halftime, up 48-36 after three quarters, and outscoring the Hearts 13-6 in the fourth quarter to win by 19 points.

East St. Louis shot 47% from the field, 23 of 49, including 6 of 20 threes. The Flyers made all nine of their foul shots, turned the ball over just eight times, and grabbed 24 rebounds.

The Hearts made 15 of 44 shots, 34%, including 4 of 21 threes. Effingham made 7 of 12 free throws, committed 11 turnovers, and pulled down 24 rebounds.

Nate Thompson wrapped up a great tournament for Effingham, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Drew Thompson scored 11 points and Parker Wolfe scored 10. Brayden Pals scored the Hearts' other three points.

LaShawn Johnson scored 18 points for the Flyers, while Jabril Olivaria added 16 points.

East St. Louis improved to 13-6 on the season, while Effingham slipped to 14-7.

CARBONDALE 65 TEUTOPOLIS 45

Carbondale led this contest pretty much start-to-finish.

The Terriers led 13-9 after one quarter, 30-22 at the half, and 50-27 after three quarters before the Shoes closed the gap to 20 points at the end.

Carbondale shot 57% from the field, 25 of 44, including 5 of 9 threes, and shot 70% for the second half. The Terriers hit 9 of 11 foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Teutopolis made 35% of its shots, 16 of 46, including 7 of 24 threes. The Shoes made 5 of 7 foul shots, committed 19 turnovers and pulled down 19 rebounds.

Davaris Macklin led Carbondale with 21 points, while his twin brother, Tavaris, added 12 points. James Baltz scored 17 points for Carbondale, now 16-5 on the season.

Evan Wermert led Teutopolis with 15 points. Also for the Shoes: Evan Addis 8, Jordan Hardiek 6, Mitch Hardiek 5, Jack Poelker 4, Matthew Deters 3, Max Niebrugge 2, and Dylan Pruemer 2. The Wooden Shoes are now 13-7 on the season.

The Salem Invitational Tournament All-Tournament Team was led by MVP Jabril Oliveria. Members of the First Team were Nate Thompson and Parker Wolfe of Effingham, Quani Reed of Mt. Vernon, Davaris Macklin of Carbondale, and LaShawn Johnson of East St. Louis. Members of the Second Team were Armond Williams of East St. Louis, Tavaris Macklin of Carbondale, Drew Thompson of Effingham, McCaleb Rich of East St. Louis, and Jackson Creel of Mt. Vernon.

 

Effingham 71, Teutopolis 55

Effingham handed Teutopolis a 71-55 loss in Friday's contest. The winner advanced to the title contest while the loser dropped into the third place game.

The Wooden Shoes ran off to a 24-14 opening quarter lead and it looked like the game was going to Teutopolis. Evan Wermert connected on two three pointers and a regular basket for eight in the quarter. The Shoes hit six three-pointers as Evan Addis chipped in with two, and Jordan Hardiek and Luke Ungrund had one each.

But the Hearts went on the three-point warpath in the second period and wiped out that deficient with seven trifectas to lead 38-31 at halftime. Tate Niebrugge knocked in three while Drew Thompson had two, Parker Wolfe one and Nate Thompson one.

The Hearts continued their momentum with a 14-10 third period and finished out strong hitting 10 of 10 free throws in the final period.

N. Thompson finished with 19 while Niebrugge added 17, P. Wolfe 16 and D. Thompson 15. Niebrugge had five three-pointers.

T-town was led by Ungrund with 17 and Wermert with 13. Ungrund knocked in five three-pointers.

In the other Friday contest, East St. Louis downed Carbondale, 63-40.
