Bulldogs, Shoes, Indians, Pirates, Eagles Nab Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham St. Anthony High School showed some offensive power in downing Casey-Westfield, 65-35 in girls basketball competition Monday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to an 18-9 opening quarter lead as six players scored led by Lucy Fearday with eight points. St. Anthony held a 36-20 halftime lead. In the second half, St. Anthony went on a 29-15 run.

Fearday finished with 20 points on 10 field goals while Riley Guy chipped in with 16 on four field goals that included two three-pointers and was six of six at the line.

Grace Karolewicz and Reese Jones were on the verge of double figures with nine points each.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis easily handled Flora to the tune of 61-22 in action Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes swept out to a 16-6 opening quarter lead and led 33-13 at halftime and 52-18 going into the final quarter.

Lexie Niebrugge nailed four three-pointers and two regular baskets to lead the Shoes with 18 points. Olivia Niemerg tallied 11. Eight other players scored in the contest.

Niemerg led in rebounds with 10 while L. Niebrugge pulled down seven. Niemerg led in steals with three. Niebrugge had four assists. Isabella Hardiek finished with two blocked shots.

Altamont pushed its record to 15-3 on the season with a 54-37 non-conference win over Vandalia Monday evening.

The Indians edged out to an 18-13 opening quarter lead and led 23-18 at halftime. Altamont's Allyson Hardiek then got on a third quarter tear, scoring nine points as the Indians pushed ahead 46-30.

Hardiek connected on nine field goals and two free throws for 20 points. Mary Guse chipped in with 12 on four three-pointers. Rachel Jackman and Brooke Runge scored eight each.

Cumberland edged Oblong, 40-37 in action Monday evening.

Oblong held an 8-6 opening quarter lead and led 21-14 at halftime. The Pirates started a comeback in the third quarter with an 11-7 run and finished out strong with a 15-9 final quarter for the win.

Sage Carr led the Pirates with 16 points while Josie Brown chipped in with nine. Carr pulled down eight rebounds. Brown had three steals.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was never challenged in downing Nokomis, 61-24 in non-conference competition Monday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 9-4 opening quarter lead then had a 16-6 second period run and outscored Nokomis 36-14 in the second half.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Claire Wilhour tallied 17 points and had four steals. Olivia Campbell chipped in with 11 points while Audrey Wilhour added 10. Natalie Oberlink pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Pana came calling and handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a rare loss this season, 64-46 Monday evening.

The Panthers quickly gained the lead with an 18-7 opening quarter run and led 28-21 at halftime. Pana then had a 21-11 third quarter.

Hamilton led the way for Pana with 19 points while Beyers and Holthaus had 12 each.

The Bobcats were led by Gracie Heckert with 14 points while Lauren Wojcik added 12 and Jaelyn Robertson 10. Robertson led in rebounds with nine and was the steals leader with four. CHBC dropped to 12-3 on the season.

Pana also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 68-39.

At Newton

Fairfield came calling and claimed a 59-49 victory over Newton in Monday evening action.

The two teams were tied at 14-14 in the opening quarter. The Eagles took a 24-23 halftime lead but Fairfield came back with a 16-10 third period and outscored Newton 20-15 in the final quarter.

Whitney Zumbahlen led the Eagles with 19 points and five rebounds. Brooke Jansen chipped in with 13 points and four assists. Allison Harris also had four assists. Claire Carr had five rebounds.

Newton drops to 14-5 on the season.

Fairfield also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 33-22 and a freshman/sophomore game, 20-14.
