SIGEL -- Sigel St. Michael claimed the championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

 

The Sharpshooters  downed Dieterich, 32-26 for the title.

In the third place contest, South Central won over North Clay (Louisville), 27-23.

North Clay took a 6-3 opening quarter lead but South Central came back with a 14-0 second period run. South Central led 17-14 going into the final period and played North Clay even.

J. Smith led South Central with nine points. North Clay was led by Hardiek with nine.

In the consolation championship, Stewardson-Strasburg handed Effingham Sacred Heart a 37-2 loss.

At Effingham

Effingham picked up a 39-31 victory over Mattoon in seventh-grade action Thursday evening.

The two teams were tied at 6-6 after the opening quarter. Effingham moved ahead 23-16 at halftime.

Belcher tallied 14 and Pals 10 for the Mustangs. EJHS is now 3-7 on the season.

At Charleston

Charleston edged St. Anthony, 37-36 in seventh-grade play Thursday.

Charleston stepped out to a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 20-16 at halftime. St. Anthony came back in the second half, outscoring Charleston 20-17 but couldn't make up that first half deficit.

St. Anthony was led by Samuel Link with 19 and Max Seachrist with 10.

At Olney

Jasper County fell to Olney in both games Thursday.

Olney won th seventh-grade game, 46-20. Jasper County was led by Wade Wickham with seven points.

In the eighth-grade game, Olney edged Jasper County, 60-58. Jasper County dropped to 3-8.

Wolf tallied 18, Nichols 16 and Flowers 14 in the loss.
