Bulldogs Down Hearts, Play Shoes for Championship Saturday

Earlier Friday, Highland beat Tolono Unity 59-43 and Breese Central won over Robinson 52-44.

That sets up the tournament finals on Saturday. Here's the schedule:

3pm--Tolono Unity vs. Robinson

4:30pm--Highland vs. Breese Central

6pm--Mattoon vs. Effingham

7:30pm--Teutopolis vs. St. Anthony

We will have the Hearts game at 6pm and Shoes/Bulldogs at 7:30pm on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

TEUTOPOLIS 82, MATTOON 44

In a battle of previously unbeatens, the Wooden Shoes rode the hot hand of Jordan Hardiek to a big early lead. Hardiek hit his first seven shots including four threes and made a foul shot to total 19 points in the first period. Add two threes from Evan Wermert and the Shoes led 31-9 at the end of the quarter. The Shoes outpointed the Green Wave 17-14 in the second quarter to lead 48-23 at halftime.

The third quarter was big as the Shoes outscored Mattoon 24-17 to lead 72-40 heading to the final period. With a continuous clock in effect in the final period, the Shoes outscored Mattoon 10-4 to win by 38 points.

(ST. ANTHONY'S DOGPOUND)

Teutopolis made 51% of its shots from the field, 31 of 61 including 9 of 23 threes. The Shoes made 10 of 16 foul shots, turned the ball over just eight times, and pulled down 24 rebounds.

Mattoon made 17 of 45 shots, 38%, including 7 of 20 threes. The Wave made two of just six free throws, committed 21 turnovers and grabbed just 17 rebounds.

Jordan Hardiek finished with 30 points to lead Teutopolis, making 10 of 15 shots including 7 of 10 threes. A side note; Hardiek only scored in the first and third quarters. Also for the Shoes, Mitch Hardiek scored 15 points, hitting six shots in a row at one point. Matthew Deters added 11 points. Also for T-Town: Evan Wermert 8, Brock Deters 6, Jack Poelker 6, Luke Ungrund 2, Evan Addis 2, and Max Niebrugge 2.

Cam'ron Thomas scored 11 points and Meade Johnson added 10 points to lead Mattoon.

ST. ANTHONY 62, EFFINGHAM 55

The Bulldogs placed four players in double figures as a key to the win. Jaccob Dust had a huge game for St. Anthony, scoring 20 points with 18 rebounds and making 8 of 12 shots. Logan Antrim scored 11 points, Jack Hoene 10 points and Kaden Fearday 10 points to lead St. Anthony. Aaron Webb added 8 and Eli Moore hit a three-pointer for the Bulldogs.

Parker Wolfe led Effingham with 34 points on 10 of 20 shooting and making 9 of 11 foul shots. Drew Thompson scored 10 points, six in the fourth quarter. Also for Effingham: Jacob Briggerman 4, Nate Thompson 3, Jacob Stoneburner 3, and Tate Niebrugge 1.

St. Anthony made 39% of its shots, 19 of 49 including 3 of 13 threes. The Bulldogs made 21 of 32 foul shots, committed just 10 turnovers, and grabbed 35 rebounds.

Effingham shot 34% from the field, 16 of 47 including 7 of 19 threes. The Hearts made 16 of 22 free throws, turned the ball over 13 times, and pulled down 28 rebounds.
