Lady Hearts Comeback for Win at Newton Tournament

The Effingham Lady Hearts came from behind again Wednesday night and got past Vandalia 44-42 at the Bob Kerans Tournament in Newton.

Effingham, now 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the tournament, trailed 7-6 after one quarter and 23-18 at halftime.

The Lady Hearts outscored Vandalia 14-6 in the third period to lead 32-29 and then held on for a two-point victory.

Lady Hearts Coach Jeff Schafer said, "Somehow we battled and found a way to win."

Hayley Diveley made some key free throws down the stretch on the way to a game-leading 14 points. Taylor Armstrong was also in double figures with 12 points. Also for Effingham: Anni Frost 8, Katie Carie 6, Kennedy Sowell 2, and Ella Niebrugge 2.

Lenee McNary led Vandalia with 14 points. 

Effingham will next see action in the tourney on Friday against host team Newton.
