Shoes, Bulldogs Win Their Season Openers

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes and the St. Anthony Bulldogs won their season openers in boys high school basketball Monday night to start the 2019 St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Shoes beat Robinson 62-54 while the Bulldogs cruised past Tolono Unity 63-34. Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

There are three games slated Tuesday. At 5pm, Mattoon will take on Robinson. At 6:30pm, Effingham will play its season opener against Highland in their season opener. At 8pm, Teutopolis will take on Breese Central in the first game for the Cougars.

TEUTOPOLIS 62, ROBINSON 54

This was anybody's game most of the contest.

The first quarter score see-sawed back and forth with the Shoes eventually leading 16-14 at the end of the period. Robinson bounced back, though, outscoring the Shoes 16-9 in the second quarter to lead 30-25 at intermission.

Halftime was good for T-Town, though, as the Shoes outscored the Maroons 22-8 to lead after three quarters 47-38. Robinson had narrow 16-15 fourth quarter edge, but the Shoes won by eight.

Teutopolis made 47% of its shots, 23 of 49, including 7 of 22 threes. The Shoes had a rough time at the foul line, making just nine of 24, and turned the ball over 15 times. They came up big on the boards, though, posting a 31-18 edge. 

Robinson made 20 of 44 shots, 45%, including 5 of 12 threes. The Maroons also didn't do well at the charity stripe, making just 11 of 24. Robinson turned the ball over 11 times. 

Jordan Hardiek led Teutopolis with 17 points, while Matthew Deters finished with 10 points to go with eight rebounds. Also for the Shoes: Luke Ungrund 8, Brock Deters 8, Mitch Hardiek 7, Evan Addis 7, and Evan Wermert 5.

Kade Lassen led Robinson with 21 points, with Brayden Childress scoring 12 and freshman Wesley Jackson 11 points.

ST. ANTHONY 63, TOLONO UNITY 34

The Bulldogs had control of the game, start-to-finish.

St. Anthony led 19-6 after one quarter and was up 38-11 at halftime. A 19-13 third quarter edge pushed the score to 57-24. Unity outscored St. Anthony 10-6 in the fourth period to account for the final score.

The Bulldogs shot 54% from the field, making 26 of 48 including 3 of 7 threes. St. Anthony was 7 of 13 from the line, turned the ball over 23 times, but grabbed 30 rebounds. Unity made 13 of 37 shots, 35%, including 6 of 18 threes. The Rockets made just two of seven free throws, committed 28 turnovers and grabbed just 15 rebounds.

St. Anthony placed four players in double figures; Jaccob Dust led all players with 15 points, Aaron Webb scored 14, Jack Hoene 12 and Logan Antrim 10. Also for St. Anthony: Jack Elder 4, Kennan Walsh 3, Craig Croy 2, Kaden Fearday 2, and Eli Moore 1.

Nate Drennan scored nine points to lead Tolono Unity.
