Nokomis Ends SEB's Season

The St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles ran into a buzzsaw named Nokomis Tuesday night and fell to the Redskins 57-34 in the semifinals of the Altamont Class 1A Sectional Tournament. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. 

Nokomis scored the first 14 points of the game and led 17-3 after one quarter, the lone Eagles points coming on a three-pointer by Nate Philpot.

Carter Sabol, the 6'8" junior inside player for Nokomis, hit a corner three at the halftime buzzer to give the Redskins a 20-point lead, 31-11. The second half was fairly even, Nokomis outscoring SEB 13-11 in the third quarter to lead 44-22, and outpointing the Eagles 13-12 in the final period to win by 23 points.

Nokomis shot 53% from the field, 23 of 43, including 4 of 10 threes. The Redskins made 7 of 8 foul shots, turned the ball over just nine times, and pulled down 22 rebounds.

SEB made 12 of 32 shots, 38%, including 7 of 17 threes. The Eagles made 3 of 5 free throws, committed 15 turnovers and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Nate Philpot led SEB with 10 points, eight in the first half. Also for the Eagles: Andy Goldsborough and Jaxson Tish with 6 apiece, Bryton Pruett 4, Jacob Baron and Nick Rosborough 3 each, and Jace McWhorter 2.

Sabol led Nokomis and all scorers with 24 points. Trevor Wright scored 10, Alex Tosetti 9, Mason Stewart 7, Evan Herpstreith 4, and Benny Clavin 3.

Nokomis improved to 28-6 on the season and will play the winner of Wednesday's Central A&M/Odin game on Friday night for the sectional championship.

St. Elmo/Brownstown closes its season with a 22-13 record and a regional championship. The Eagles say goodbye to seniors Nate Philpot, Rocky Himes and Braden Sidwell.
