Lady Hearts Advance to Sectional Championship Game

The Effingham Lady Hearts avenged a season-ending loss to the Olney Lady Tigers Tuesday night and advanced to the 3A Sectional championship game at Salem in the process, defeating the Lady Tigers 57-35. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham will play Breese Mater Dei Thursday at 7pm at Salem. The game will be on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. Mater Dei defeated Carterville 55-46 in the other game at Salem Tuesday night.

The Lady Hearts had lost to Olney in the regular season ending game by one, losing a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter in the process. 

There was no such situation Tuesday night.

Effingham led 9-8 after one quarter, but pushed the lead to 25-18 at halftime and 38-27 after three quarters before outpointing the Lady Tigers 19-8 in the fourth quarter to win by 22 points.

Effingham made 17 of 35 shots from the field, 49%, including three of seven threes. The Lady Hearts made 20 of 28 foul shots, committed just five turnovers, and grabbed 29 rebounds.

Olney Richland County made 12 of 44 shots, 27%, including 4 of 19 threes. The Lady Tigers made 7 of 13 free throws, turned the ball over seven times, and pulled down 23 rebounds.

Carsyn Fearday led Effingham in scoring with 20 points, while Abby Weis scored 15 points and Miranda Fox scored 10 points. Also for Effingham: Natalie Carie 8, and Skyler Schafer 4. Fearday had 10 rebounds and Schafer nine.

Anna Blank led Olney Richland County with 10 points. 

Effingham improved to 27-6 on the season, while Olney Richland County closes its campaign at 19-9.
