EHS, St. Anthony, T-town, Neoga Nab Girls Wins

Effingham High School pushed its record to 20-3 on the season with a 51-43 Apollo Conference victory over Taylorville Monday evening in girls basketball. The night was Alumni Night.

The Hearts stepped out to a 16-8 opening quarter lead as Natalie Carie put in two three-pointers and a basket and Abby Weis knocked in a three-pointer and another basket for five.

The Tornadoes came back with a 9-5 second quarter run to pull within 21-17 at halftime. Carsyn Fearday scored 12 of the Hearts' 13 points in that third quarter to keep them ahead.

Taylorville trailed by only three going into the final quarter. That's when the Hearts put in eight of nine free throws and Fearday  continued her hot hand with three baskets and two free throws for eight points.

Fearday finished with 25 points to lead the Hearts while Carie tacked on 12 and Weis 10.

The Effingham Tournament finished out during the morning and afternoon. Bloomington defeated Vandalia 45-39. Pana then downed Bloomington 53-36.

EHS won with a 4-0 record followed by Pana 3-1, Bloomington 2-2, Centralia 1-3 and Vandalia 0-4.

Members of the All-Tournament Team were Skyler Schafer, Abby Weis, Miranda Fox and Carsyn Fearday from Effingham, Alyssa Hutton and Amiyah Smith from Centralia, Lanee McNary and Megan Kern from Vandalia, Sophia O'Neal and Kamaria Gant from Bloomington and Madison Ashcraft and Shania Schoonover from Pana.

At Farina

Effingham St. Anthony was hot from the free throw line in downing South Central 65-24 in National Trail Conference action Monday evening.

The Bulldogs zipped out to a 25-7 opening quarter lead and led 42-18 at halftime. St. Anthony connected on 21 of 24 free throws. Meg Richards finished with 20 to lead St. Anthony. Richards hit five field goals and was 10 of 10 at the line.

Also in double figures were Clare McHugh with 14 and Shea Kinkelaar with 13. Sydney Gibson pulled down seven rebounds while McHugh had four steals. McHugh, Riley Guy and Richards had two assists each.

"It was great to shoot so well from the free throw line at 88%," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Meg really led the way with 10 of 10. Monday night after the tournament is always a hard game to get up for especially after a loss, but our girls responded well."

St. Anthony improved to 5-1 in the conference, 18-9 overall.

South Central was led by Laney Webster with nine points.

At Teutopolis

Two ranked teams clashed Monday evening as Teutopolis played host to Altamont. T-town was ranked eighth in Class 2A while Altamont held the 10th spot in Class 1A.

The Wooden Shoes  edged out to a 17-12 opening quarter lead as Lexie Niebrugge scored seven points. Six Altamont players scored a basket each in even scoring.

The lead went to 41-22 at halftime as Hope Bueker went on a run. Bueker connected on six field goals that included a three-pointer for 13 of the team's 24 points. The lead was 54-33 going into the final period and Bueker continued on with her hot scoring with nine points.

Bueker finished with 26 to lead the Shoes. Niebrugge tallied nine. Morgan Mette had two assists. Claire Bushur had two blocked shots and led in rebounds with four. M. Mette had five steals while H. Bueker and Niebrugge had three each.

Altamont was led in scoring by Ellie McManaway with 10 points and JoAnna Schultz and Leah Mayhaus with nine each. Tinley Mette led in rebounds with five, had four assists and three steals. McManaway had four assists and three steals. JoAnna Schultz, McManaway and Ti. Mette had one blocked shot each.

The Indians drop to 24-3 on the season.

At Neoga

Neoga claimed a National Trail Conference win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City as the Indians celebrated Alumni Night.

The Indians have had girls basketball at Neoga High School for 40 years and former players, coaches and managers returned for the Alumni Night.

Neoga edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter and led 26-22 at halftime. The Indians then had a 20-10 third quarter run.

Olivia Titus led the way with 19 points while Kylee Phillips added 11 and Mary Hill chipped in with 10. Titus had three trifectas in the game. Neoga improves to 13-14 on the season.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson with 12 points. Lauren Wojcik led in rebounds with five and three assists. Carsen Burks had three steals.

Newton led 28-25 at halftime but Marshall came back with a 20-8 third quarter and claimed the victory, 64-55.

Marshall was led by Compton with 18, Osborn with 16 and Clark with 13.

Newton was led by Brooke Jansen with 13 and Allison Harris with nine. Jansen led in rebounds with eight. Harris led in assists with three.

The Eagles drop to 7-16 on the season.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 50-40.
