St. A, Newton, T-town Claim Shootout Victories

Five games were played Saturday at the Effingham St. Anthony Boys Basketball Shootout.

In the opener, Olney downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 78-50.

Newton then won over St. Elmo/Brownstown 68-60.

SEB had a 14-12 lead after one quarter, but Newton was on top 28-25 at halftime; SEB had pulled back in front 44-38 after three quarters, but Newton poured in 30 points in the fourth quarter and won the game by eight.

Each team put four players in double figures; for Newton, Justin Zumbahlen scored 15 points, Kyle Schafer 14, and Connor Bierman and Jarrett Tharp 11 apiece. For SEB, Andy Goldsborough scored 15 points, Bryton Pruett 13, Nate Philpot, back from an injury, 12 and Jacob Baron 11.

Central A&M downed Dieterich, 83-60.

Dieterich played well, but Central A&M played a sensational game to improve to 14-3 on the season. The Raiders shot 57% from the field including 10 of 25 threes.Conner Heaton led with 25 pionts, 21 in the first half while Jacob Paradee and Brycen Burgener each scored 17 points with Burgener scoring all of his points in the first half.

For Dieterich, Derek Kuhl led Dieterich with 17 points while Collin Hartke scored 12 points. Dieterich is now 10-7 on the season.

In game four, Teutopolis edged Casey-Westfield, 49-46.

In the most exciting game of the day, the Wooden Shoes came from behind for the second day in a row to post a win.

Casey-Westfield, who entered the game with a 15-1 record, led 13-8 after one quarter, was tied 24-24 at halftime and led 37-35 after three quarters, before the Shoes posted a 14-9 fourth quarter edge to win by three.

Dawson Smith led Teutopolis and all scorers with 20 points, while Clint Weber scored 16 points. Teutopolis shot 49% from the field on 18 of 37 shooting including 2 of 8 threes. The Shoes made 11 of 12 from the foul line.

Luke Richards led Casey-Westfield with 14 points, while Marcus Downs scored 10 points. Casey-Westfield was 20 of 48 for 42% including 4 of 10 threes.

In the final game of the evening, St. Anthony defeated Cumberland, 65-35.

The Bulldogs shot 50% from the field, 26 of 52, including 7 of 12 threes. Cumberland, playing without their leading scorer Zach Wolke, shot 14 of 38 from the field for 37%, including 5 of 14 threes.

The Bulldogs made six of eight free throws. Jaccob Dust and Aaron Webb each scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs. St. anthony improved to 11-6.

Brennyn Cutts scored 15 points to lead the Pirates, now 10-8 on the season.
