Altamont Moves Into Own Championship Game, Regional Roundup

ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School moved into the championship of its own Class 1A Boys Basketball Regional with a 67-47 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown Wednesday evening.

The Indians edged out to a 15-11 opening quarter lead on SEB as Mitchell Stevens and Evan Cornett tallied four points each while Drake Williams nailed a three-pointer. St. Elmo/Brownstown had five players score in the quarter.

The two teams played to a 17-17 second period. After scoring one free throw in the first quarter, Sam Childerson broke loose with two baskets and four of four from the free throw line for eight points and Stevenson added seven for the Indians. Klayton Kroll knocked in three baskets for six points and Isaac Maxey and Joel Logue put in a three-pointer each for SEB.

The Indians held a 32-28 halftime lead then went on a tear in the third period to lead 53-40. This time around it was Ryan Armstrong's turn to score as he hit three trifectas and another basket for 11 points. The Indians finished out with a 14-7 final period.

Armstrong finished with 19 points to lead the Indians while Stevenson tallied 17 and Childerson 13.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was playing without leading scorer Landon Feezel who was out with an injury. Maxey was the lone player in double figures with 16 while Lewis Brown added nine.

In the opening contest, Nokomis handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 48-43 loss.

CHBC held a 9-8 opening quarter lead as four players scored for the Bobcats. Nokomis came back with a 14-12 second period to lead 22-21 at halftime.

Nokomis continued to push farther ahead with a 10-7 third quarter for a 32-28 lead going into the final quarter. Nokomis then had a 16-15 final period to pull out the victory.

CHBC was led by two players in double figures. Cody Grove and Konner Blackerby tallied 12 each. Aaron Nohren chipped in with nine points.

Altamont will square off against Nokomis Friday for the regional championship at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the Nokomis Sectional Tuesday and will take on either St. Anthony or Grayville who will be competing at the North Clay Regional Friday.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Oblong advanced to the championship of the Class 1A Dieterich Regional with a 57-47 win over Cisne Wednesday evening.

Cisne stepped out to a big 17-8 opening quarter lead but Oblong came back with a 13-2 second period run to lead 21-19 at halftime. Oblong then had a 14-13 edge in the third period and finished off with a 22-15 final quarter.

Maus led the winners with 13 points while Johnson added 12 and Goodwin 11.

Oblong now faces Dieterich for the regional championship at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

Moweaqua Central A&M moved into the title contest of the Bethany Okaw Valley Regional.

CAM handed Okaw Valley a 69-60 defeat. CAM took the early 21-13 lead and led 31-26 at halftime and 43-40 going into the final period then had a 26-20 run.

Moweaqua Central A&M will now face top-seeded Patoka at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship. The winner advances to the Nokomis Sectional and will take on the Dieterich Regional champion at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Class 2A Newton Regional

Robinson claimed a 66-55 win over Lawrenceville in the Class 2A Newton Regional Wednesday.

The Maroons trailed Lawrenceville 28-27 at halftime then had a 15-13 third period and a 22-14 final quarter.

White tallied 19, Dirks 13, Sandschafer 10 and James 10 for the winners.

Robinson will now take on Marshall at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

 

Class 2A Pana Regional

Pana claimed a victory over Shelbyville 52-44 in the Class 2A Pana Regional.

Pana now moves into the championship game against Teutopolis Friday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the West Frankfort Sectional next Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Flora Regional winner.
