Hearts Win Big; Other Friday 12-2-2016 Varsity B-Ball Scores

The Effingham Hearts put on a clinic Friday night, opening Apollo Conference play with a 90-66 win over the Charleston Trojans.

The game at Charleston was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Effingham shot 68% from the field, including 11 of 17 from three-point range. Overall, they made 36 of 53 shots and added six of eight from the foul line. Most remarkable of all, Effingham did not commit a turnover during the first three quarters of the game.

The Hearts led 24-12 after one quarter and 48-27 at halftime, then outscored Charleston 29-15 in the third quarter to lead 77-42 at the end of the period. Having cleared the bench for the fourth quarter, the Hearts were outscored 24-13 in the period.

Charleston didn't shoot badly, making 24 of 50 shots for 48%, including eight of 13 in the fourth quarter. They were 16 of 21 from the line made two of four three-point tries and actually outrebounded Effingham 23-20. Charleston turned the ball over 13 times.

Brent Beals led Effingham with 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting including six three-pointers. Landon Wolfe scored 19 points, going nine-for-nine from the field. Grant Wolfe scored 15 points on six of nine shooting, and Jacob Donaldson scored 13 points on six of 10 shooting. Also for Effingham, Mason Hull, Trevor Kreke and Ryan Sandifer each scored five points and Ryan Huelsbusch scored two points.

Effingham improved to 5-0 on the season, 1-0 in the Apollo Conference. Charleston is now 2-3 on the season under new coach and Neoga native Blain Mayhall, and 0-1 in the Apollo.

Charleston won the JV game 58-29 in the opener for both squads. Sandifer led Effingham with nine points, while Cooper Jackson and Blake Lohman each scored seven points.

 

At Dieterich

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg picked up a National Trail Conference victory over host Dieterich, 66-58.

Dieterich stepped out to a big 22-7 opening quarter but the Hatchets came back with a 26-8 third period after trailing 36-22 at halftime. WSS led 48-44 going into the final quarter then had an 18-14 run for the victory.

Nc Hutchinson, a 6-foot senior, led the charge with 30 points while Josh Overbeck added 21. Hutchinson connected on 19 of his 30 points in the third quarter charge and hit six three-pointers. The Hatchets are now 1-0 in the NTC, 5-0 overall.

Dieterich was led by Ryan Radloff with 20 and Calloway Campton with 17. The Maroons drop to 0-1 in the conference, 3-3 overall.

At Neoga

St. Elmo/Brownstown came calling and claimed a 57-45 National Trail Conference win over Neoga.

SEB held a 26-18 halftime lead then had a 31-27 second half. Landon Feezel tallied 19, Klayton Kroll 12 and Lewis Brown 12 for the winners.

Neoga was led by Caleb Hill with 18 and Drew Ramert with 16.

At Vandalia

Altamont trailed Vandalia 34-32 at halftime and 54-51 going into the final quarter. Mitchell Stevenson, who had scored 14 going into the final period, got on a roll.

Stevenson, a 5-foot-10 junior, nailed four trifectas and hit four of four from the free throw line for 16 points as the Indians pulled out a 76-72 victory. Stevenson finished with 30 points. Also in double figures were Ryan Armstrong with 15 and Sam Childerson with 11.

Odin came calling and picked up a 61-49 non-conference win over South Central Friday evening.

The Cougars stepped out to a 17-7 opening quarter and still led 33-28 at halftime. The score was tied at 41-41 going into the final quarter. Odin then had a 20-8 final period run for the victory.

South Central was led by Trevor Markley with 14 points.

Paris edged Newton 45-43 in action Friday evening.

The Tigers took a 12-9 opening quarter lead but Newton came back to knot the score at 23-23 at halftime. The Eagles had a 14-11 third quarter to lead 37-34 going into the final period. But Paris came back with an 11-6 score to pull out the victory.

Newton was led by Nick Cohorst with 13 and Tim Weber with 12.

North Clay (Louisville) handed Sandoval a 48-42 non-conference victory Friday.

The Cardinals held a 14-5 opening quarter lead and led 32-24 at halftime. Sandoval pulled within 31-29 going into the final period but North Clay connected on its free throws to pull out the win.

Brandon Repking scored 20 for the winners while Bryce Walker chipped in with 10.
