Teutopolis will be playing for third place at the Class 7-3A Junior High Girls State Basketball Tournament while Altamont will play for that same position in the Class 7-2A State Tournament. Sigel St. Michael picked up a first round loss in the Class 7-1A State Tournament to end the season.

 

Class 7-1A State Tournament

Sigel St. Michael took its unbeaten record (22-0) against Carthage, who had suffered only one loss this season and was 22-1.

The Sharpshooters took an early lead but Carthage fought back, sinking two free throws to tie the game and then Megan Harrell drove the lane to push the lead to 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

St. Michael had good looks at the basket and second chance opportunities but struggled to score in the half. Carthage continued its pressure in the quarter and increased its lead to 19-8 at halftime. St. Michael came back in the second half to outscore the Bluegirls 12-10 but it wasn't enough.

St. Michael was led by Hope Bueker with nine points and Lexie Niebrugge with seven. The Sharpshooters ended their season with a 22-1 mark while Carrtage advanced to face Normal Epiphany and take a 26-12 win. Carthage will be playing for the state championship Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

In other games, Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes downed LaSalle Trinity Catholic 34-15, Danville Schlarman won over London Mills Valley 41-27 and Normal Epiphany downed Joliet Laraway 27-21. In the second round, Decatur beat Danville Schlarman 36-27. Our Lady of Lourdes faces Carthage for the state title while Danville Schlarman and Normal Epiphany square off for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Class 7-2A State Tournament

Altamont won its opening round game over Decatur Hope 35-15. The Wildcats stepped out to a 16-9 first half lead then had a 19-6 second half run.

Abby Goeckner led Altamont in scoring with 11 points while Ellie McManaway added 10. Decatur Hope picked up its first loss of the season and ended with an 18-1 record.

Altamont then advanced to face Lewistown Central who had beaten Greenfield 30-21. Lewistown Central raced to a 7-4 lead at the end of the opening quarter and led 14-9 at the half. The Indians used an 8-3 advantage in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Avery Smith led the winners with 10 points.

Altamont was led by Ellie McManaway with 10 and Brooke Runge with eight. The Wildcats are now 24-3 on the season and will face Bloomington Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. Thursday for third place. Bloomington Corpus Christi beat Gardner 37-21 then fell to Bushnell-Prairie City 35-18. Busnell-Prairie City had beaten Arcola 35-31.

Bushnell-Prairie City faces Lewistown Central at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship.

Class 7-3A State Tournament

Teutopolis opened competition in the state tournament with a 27-15 victory over Morris Saratoga.

The Wooden Shoes broke a 7-7 opening quarter tie with an 8-3 second period run to lead 15-10 at halftime. The Shoes then had a slight 7-5 third period edge but held Saratoga scoreless in the final quarter.

Carly Michels tallied 17 for the winners.

The Shoes then fell to Springfield St. Agnes by a 44-7 count. St. Agnes remained unbeaten with a 25-0 record.

St. Agnes leaped out to a 17-2 opening quarter run and held T-town scoreless in the third period, 13-0.

Michels scored five for the Shoes. T-town is now 17-9 on the season and will play for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday against Stanford Olympia.

Springfield St. Agnes had beaten Havana 32-14, Stanford Olympia won over Lockport Kelvin Grove 25-19 and Gillespie downed Paris Mayo 36-26. Stanford Olympia beat Gillespie 29-23. Stanford Olympia is 13-11.

Springfield St. Agnes and Gillespie will square off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship.
