VANDALIA -- Altamont Junior High School claimed the championship of the Seventh-Grade Girls Old State Capital Basketball Tournament in Vandalia Thursday and Friday.

In Thursday action, Altamont lost to Greenville 40-37. Greenville held an 18-17 halftime lead then had a 12-10 final quarter edge. Altamont was led by Mary Guse with 16 points.

Altamont then came back with a 30-6 victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo. Altamont held a 17-4 first half lead then held BSE scoreless in the second half. Abby Goeckner and Ellie McManaway scored nine points each for the Wildcats.

In Friday play, Altamont claimed the championship by downing Vandalia 28-18. The Wildcats held a 22-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

Runge tallied 16 for the winners.

At Beecher City

Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick split victories with Neoga in Friday competition.

BCCH won the seventh-grade contest 36-3. Madison Cherry scored 10 points for the winners. Neoga was led by Gresens with two.

In eighth-grade action, Neoga claimed a 37-32 win. E. Titus and O. Titus tallied eight points each for the winners. BCCH was led by Lauren Wojcik with 14.
