Altamont, SEB, Newton Among Girls Opening Round Regional Winners

Girls Class 1A and 2A basketball regionals got underway Monday evening around the state of Illinois. Altamont, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Newton were among the opening round winners.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Altamont handed Ramsey a 59-50 loss in the first game of the evening.

The Indians trailed Ramsey 13-8 after the opening quarter but came back with a 21-12 run to lead 29-25 at halftime. The two teams played to a 14-14 third quarter tie before Altamont had a 16-11 final period surge.

Three players hit double figures for Altamont. Carly McHugh led the way with 14 points while Keidron Duckwitz and Brooke Burns added 13 each.

With the win, Altamont, seeded fourth, will now face top-seeded Dieterich Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In the second game, Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a 62-53 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

CHBC held a 10-7 opening quarter lead but BSE came roaring back with a 24-6 second period runt o lead 31-16 at halftime.

BSE had even scoring as Kyrstyn Fitch, Audriana Pruett and Morgan Brown scored 15 points each to lead the way. Pruett connected on three trifectas while Brown had two.

CHBC was led by Jensyn Morrison with 22 points. Chandler Ward and Skylar Morrison had nine each.

Brownstown/St.Elmo, seeded third, advances to face No. 2 St. Anthony at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Class 2A Robinson Regional

Lawrenceville and Newton picked up opening round victories in this regional Monday evening.

Lawrenceville edged Mount Carmel 45-44 in the opening contest.

Newton then pounded Robinson 55-29 in the second game. The Eagles held a 27-12 halftime lead and never looked back.

Kerner connected on eight field goals, which included three trifectas, and was six of seven at the line for 25 points. Hartrich contributed nine points and Frohning eight.

The Eagles are now 18-11 on the season and will take on Marshall at 7:30 p.m. today. In the opening contest, Lawrenceville will face Flora at 6.

Class 2A Robinson Regional

Class 2A Pana Regional

There was only one game contested at this regional. Shelbyville/Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a 50-37 win over Cumberland.

Shelbyville/Windsor/Stew-Stras led 26-24 at halftime then had a 24-13 second half run. The Rams broke a 12-game losing streak and stands at 9-18 on the season. The Rams were led by Morgan Poweres with 19 and Grace Schuler with 18.

Cumberland was led by Meghan Willenborg with 12 points. The Pirates end the campaign at 1-22.

Shelbyville/Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to face Sullivan at 6 p.m, today followed by Teutopolis taking on Pana at 7:30.

Class 2A Pana Regional

Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional

Casey-Westfield picked up the opening round victory over Hume Shiloh 59-41. The second contest went to Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond over Martinsville 48-11.

Casey-Westfield will now face top-seeded Neoga at 6 p.m. today followed by Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond against Arcola at 7:30.

 

Class 1A Palestine Regional

Red Hill (Bridgeport) took on North Clay (Louisville) in the lone game in this regional Monday evening and claimed a 50-36 victory.

Red Hill will meet Palestine/Hutsonville at 6 p.m. today. The second game features South Central taking on Oblong at 7:30 p.m.
