Shoes Fall To Mt. Zion, LIC, LOVC Tourney Results

TEUTOPOLIS -- Mount Zion High School knocked off the giant killer, Teutopolis, 64-55 in boys basketball competition Tuesday evening.

T-town went through the Nashville Tournament taking out then top-ranked Nashville and 14th-ranked Breese Mater Dei. The Shoes had moved up to No. 2 in the state rankings and it was Mount Zion's turn to prove to be the giant killer as the Braves immediately stepped out to a four-point lead in the opening quarter.

From there, Mount Zion led 34-25 at halftime. T-town mounted a rally in the third quarter to pull within five points going into the final period. But the Braves regained the momentum with a 12-8 run.

Payton Grinestaff led the Braves with 17 points while Austin Thacker added 13 and Austin Cox 12. The Braves are now 10-10 on the season.

T-town was led by Brett Mette with 17 and Devin Smith with 12. The Shoes drop to 18-4.

LOVC Southeast Division Tournament

Cumberland fell to Tri-County 53-39 in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division Tournament Tuesday.

The two teams were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter. Tri-County had a 9-3 run in the second period and held a 32-21 lead going into the final quarter then had a 21-1 run.

Houston Napier led Cumberland with 11 points while Brandon Shaon added 10. The Pirates drop into the third place contest Friday at 6 p.m. against Villa Grove/Heritage.

In the second contest Tuesday evening, Hutsonville/Palestine outlasted Villa Grove/Heritage 111-101. Hutsonville/Palestine faces Tri-County at 8 p.m. Friday for the championship. In the opening game of the evening, Oblong meets Martinsville at 5p.m. for the consolation championship.

LIC Tournament

Lawrenceville and Casey-Westfield picked up victories Tuesday evening to advance to the championship game of the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Lawrenceville was a 78-61 winner over Flora in the first contest. Casey-Westfield downed Marshall 70-65 in the second game.

Tonight's games feature Robinson against Olney at 6 p.m. and Red Hill (Bridgeport) taking on Paris at 7:30 p.m., both in consolation bracket action. The winners advance to the consy title contest Friday at 5 p.m.

Lawrenceville and Casey-Westfield square off at 8 p.m. Friday for the title while Flora and Marshall meet for third place at 6:30 p.m.
