EHS Falls In Own Tourney, Highland, LIC Meets

Effingham High School saw its hopes for the championship of its own girls basketball round robin tournament go by the wayside with a 39-30 loss to Vandalia Thursday evening.

The two teams came in tied at 2-0 with only two games left today after last night's contests. The win gives Vandalia the tournament title with a 3-0 record. The Vandals face Pana tonight at 6 followed by Effingham taking on Centralia at 7:30. If  Vandalia loses tonight and EHS wins, they would both finish with 3-1 records but the head-to-head competition gives the title to the Vandals.

Vandalia edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 14-12 at halftime. Then the Vandals broke open the contest as Tinker went on a 12-point run in the third period and Vandalia led 28-20 going into the final quarter.

Meyer fnished with 16 to lead Vandalia while Tinker contributed 14. EHS was led by Maddy Field with 14.

In the opening contest, Greenville edged Pana 55-51. Going into tonight's games, Vandalia is 3-0, Effingham and Centralia are 2-1, Greenville 1-3 and Pana 0-3.

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis captured its second victory at the 29th Annual Highland Girls Basketball Tournament and will now play for fifth place.

The Wooden Shoes downed Salem 84-78 in overtime. Four players hit double digits for T-town. Sandschafer led the way with 22 points while Drees added 20, Thompson 14 and Hardiek 13.

T-town took a 20-12 opening quarter lead but Salem came back to pull within 38-34 at halftime. T-town pulled ahead 52-44 going into the final quarter. Salem then had a 24-16 run to knot the score sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime session, Thompson knocked down two three-pointers and had two free throws while Drees connected on five of six free throws and Hardiek a basket and a free throw.

Taylorville then won over Nashville 53-37 in consolation bracket action. Taylorville will now meet T-town at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for fifth place.

Belleville West beat host Highland 77-66 and advanced to the championship game at 2:30 p.m. against Breese Mater Dei. Highland dropped into the third place game to face Breese Central at 1 p.m.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Marshall edged Flora 37-36 to capture the championship game of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Thursday evening.

In the third place contest, Paris was a 46-41 winner over Lawrenceville. The consolation championship went to Olney over Newton 51-46.
