St. Anthony, Teutopolis To Meet For Greenville Sectional Crown

GREENVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis will meet for the Class 2A Greenville Baseball Sectional championship after both picked up victories in opening round play Wednesday in games heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Bulldogs led off with a 2-0 first inning lead on Roxana. Beau Adams started the first off with a single. Aiden Lauritzen then hit a sacrifice bunt to move Adams over. Brock Fearday then followed with an RBI single. Fearday stole second and went to third on a balk. He was then brought home on a single by Brady Hatton.

The Bulldogs had runners on in the third. Adams reached base on an error and stole second. He went to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate for a 3-0 lead.

Then in the fourth, St. Anthony pushed its lead to 4-0. Will Fearday was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch and eventually came home on a sacrifice bunt by Max Koenig.

St. Anthony finished its scoring in the fifth. With one out, B. Fearday singled and stole second. He came home on a second single by Hatton.

Roxana rumbled in five innings, putting runners on base but couldn't get them home. The Shells opened with their leadoff batter drawing a walk but was left stranded on a strikeout and a double play.

The Shells went up and down in the second. They put two runners on in the third but once again, the Bulldogs got out of the frame with a strikeout, a rundown and a unassisted play at first base. With two strikeouts by B. Fearday in the fifth, Roxana's Max Autery doubled and Brady Jones reached base but was the third out on a fielder's choice.

Mason Crump doubled to start the sixth for the Shells. Kyle Campbell drew a walk but was thrown out on a fielder's choice hit by Kael Hester. Crump reached third and Hester stole second. But Fearday came on to finish the final four innings and got out of the sixth without damage with two strikeouts. He finished off with a one-two-three final inning on two groundouts and a strikeout.

The Bulldogs had seven hits led by Hatton with two singles and two RBI, B. Fearday with two singles and an RBI, Adams with two singles and Koenig with an RBI.

Lauritzen picked up the pitching win, going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, one walk while striking out two.

Roxana ended the season with a 22-14 record while St. Anthony advances with a 23-5-1 mark.

In the second game, Teutopolis blanked Columbia, 3-0.

Columbia's Mason Voegele drew a leadoff walk to start the first inning. He stole second and was sacrificed over on a bunt by Micah James. But a pop fly and a strikeout by Austin Borries ended the threat.

The Wooden Shoes then took advantage with a 1-0 first inning lead. With two outs, Mick Niebrugge drew a walk. Austin Borries followed with a single and Mitch Koester then drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases. Evan Waldhoff took advantage of a third walk and Niebrugge scored.

Both teams went up and down in order in the second inning. The Eagles put a runner on in the third as Voegele singled and proceeded to steal second. but he was left stranded again.

T-town tallied a second run in the third inning. With one out, Niebrugge banged out a home run and the Shoes led 2-0.

Columbia had two runners on in the fourth but the Shoes, once again, got out of the frame unscathed.

T-town socred its final run in the sixth. With one out, Koester drew a walk. Waldhoff was hit by a pitch. Zac Niebrugge reached base on a fielder's choice that brought Koester home.

The Eagles went up and down in the fifth. Micah James singled in the sixth but was left stranded and Logan Bosch doubled in the seventh and was also left stranded.

T-town had only three hits, a solo home run by M. Niebrugge and singles by Borries and Kreke. Waldhoff and Jake Bushue had an RBI each.

Borries was the winner. He went six innings, giving up three hits, two walks while striking out five to improve to 6-2 on the mound. Gavin Addis came on in the final  inning for his second save.

Columbia finished the season with a 24-8 record. Teutopolis advances with a 24-11 mark.

Teutopolis and St. Anthony will meet Saturday at 11 a.m. for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday. The winner will take on the Benton Sectional champion, either Benton or Mount Carmel. Those two teams meet Saturday at 11 a.m.

The two winners will travel to Carbondale Monday for a 2 p.m. contest and the right to advance to the Class 2A State Tournament at Peoria's Dozer Park Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m.
