EHS, BSE Claim Regular Season Baseball Victories

Effingham High School couldn't keep pace with Highland and fell in a baseball contest by a 5-0 count Tuesday.

A single by Garrin Stone put Highland on the board in the top of the first by a 2-0 count. The Bulldogs added a third run in the second after Trey Koisher singled.

Highland added on two more runs in the sixth. Chase Knebel earned the win for Highland. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and no runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking none.

Braden Verdeyen, Colton Webb, Brody Boehm, Carter Braddy and Kaden Koeberlein each collected a single for Effingham. The Hearts didn't committ an error and Kaiden Nichols had the most chances in the field with six.

Highland finished with eight hits led by Trey Koisher with two singles and an RBI, Deklan Riggs with two singles, Chase Knebel with a double and two RBI and Jake Ottensmier with a double.

In the junior varsity game, Effingham outlasted Highland by a 16-14 tally.

Highland held a 13-6 lead after five innings. The Hearts came back with a 10-4 sixth and held off Highland in the seventh for the win.

Keegan Koester led the way for the Hearts with a single, two doubles and four RBI. Andrew Wagoner added a double, triple and three RBI, Will Hecht a double and an RBI and Brayden Tucker with two singles and an RBI.

Jacob Warner threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and striking out three for the win.

The Hearts will return to action Friday traveling to Bethalto Civic Memorial.

At Brownstown

Adam Atwood lined a base hit down the third base line as Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a walkoff win over Woodlawn, 6-5 Tuesday.

BSE held a 4-0 opening inning lead but Woodlawn came back with three runs in the third. BSE moved its lead to 5-3 in the fourth. Woodlawn then tallied a run in the fifth and tied the score in the top of the seventh, 5-5.

Josiah Maxey walked to lead off the eighth for the Bombers. He stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Atwood then singled Maxey home for the winning run.

Colin Maxey had two singles and an RBI for the winners while Keelan Speagle had an RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo is now 9-12-1 on the season and will be back in action at the North Clay Regional Thursday taking on the host North Clay/Clay City squad at 4 p.m.
