Father McGivney Edges St. Anthony, Area Baseball Roundup

GLEN CARBON -- The game went 11 innings before Father McGivney pulled out a 2-1 victory over Effingham St. Anthony in high school baseball action Thursday.

The Bulldogs moved into a 1-0 lead in the second and tallied two more in the third. But Father McGivney tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams scored a single run in the fifth and the Bulldogs moved ahead again with a run in the sixth.

However, Father McGivney knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh.

St. Anthony moved ahead with a run in the top of the 11th but Father McGivney rallied with two runs in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory.

The Bulldogs outhit the Griffins by a 14-10 count but finished with three errors.

Connor Roepke led the way with two singles, a home run and two RBI. Brady Hatton had two singles and a double while Beau Adams and Aiden Lauritzen added a double each. Brock Fearday finished with two singles and an RBI and Will Fearday chipped in with a single and two RBI.

Kamp was the winning pitcher going 5.2 innings allowing five runs on 11 hits, one walk and striking out five.

St. Anthony handed Charleston a loss in junior varsity action, 11-4.

Both teams had nine hits but the Trojans committed four errors.

The Bulldogs were led by Eric Utz with two singles and three RBI, Alex Mayer with two singles and two RBI and Will Vonderheide with two singles and one RBI.

At Beecher City

North Clay (Louisville) came calling and handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City an 11-6 loss Thursday.

CHBC edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second but North Clay tied in the top of the third. The Bobcats regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.

But here came the Cardinals. North Clay tallied five runs in the fourth and finished with five runs in the seventh.

North Clay had 11 hits in the contest. The Cardinals improved to 13-12-1 on the season and returns to action Saturday against Shelbyville in an 11 a.m. contest.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by AJ Radloff and Conner Nowitzke with three singles each. Radloff had two RBI. Wyatt Rueff added two singles and an RBI and Clive Schlanser had two RBI.

At Newton

Newton edged South Central, 2-1 in Thursday action.

The Eagles held a 1-0 lead in the second inning. South Central tied in the top of the sixth but the Eagles came back with a run in the bottom of the frame for the victory.

Both teams had five hits but the Cougars committed five errors.

Drake Wolf had two singles and two RBI to lead Newton.

Gus Bierman went five innings for the win on the mound. He gave up one run on three hits, one walk while striking out three.

South Central was led by Callaway Smith with two singles and Colton Smith had a single and an RBi.

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran scored early then held off Brownstown/St. Elmo for a 5-3 victory Thursday.

BSE held a 1-0 lead in the top of the second but CORL tallied two in the bottom of the frame then added on three in the third. BSE's other two runs came in the fourth.

The Bombers had a 5-4 edge in the hitting department. Cade Schaub and Corey Hoopingarner had a double each. Calin Chandler had the lone RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo dropped to 6-12-1 on the season and returns to action Monday against Mulberry Grove at Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget.

At Centralia

Greenville tallied two runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-1 victory over Altamont Thursday.

Greenville added to its lead with a run in the second and two in the third. Altamont scored its lone run in the fifth.

 Sussenbach threw a one-hitter with two walks while striking out nine for the pitching victory.

The Comets had eight hits led by Oliver with two doubles and two RBI, C. Alstat with three singles and Sussenbach with a double and an RBI.

Altamont's lone hit was a single by Dillan Elam with an RBI. Ethan Robbins scored the lone run.
