South Central Beats EHS, Neoga Downs Brownstown/St. Elmo

Despite outhitting South Central, Effingham High School fell in a 2-1 loss to the Cougars in baseball action Wednesday.

The Hearts took a 1-0 opening inning lead but South Central came right back to knot the score in the second. The Cougars then scored what proved to be the winning run in the third.

Evan Hoover had the lone RBI for South Central. Callaway Smith, Trevan Sidwell, Colton Smith and Zane Montes had a single each. The Cougars took advantage of six walks.

Callaway Smith went five innings for the Cougars, allowing one run on seven hits, two walks and striking out four. Sidwell came on to earn the save, going two innings with three strikeouts.

South Central had four hits to eight for the Hearts. Carter Braddy led EHS with a double. Camden Raddatz had a single and an RBI.

Four EHS pitchers combined to give up only four runs and had nine strikeouts but gave up six walks.

Next up for Effingham is an Apollo Conference doubleheader at Charleston Saturday.

South Central will return to play Saturday at the Centralia Tournament.

Effingham was an 8-1 winner in the junior varsity game. The Hearts ran out to a 6-0 lead in the third inning. South Central scored its lone run in the fourth. The Hearts put together two more runs in the fifth.

EHS had nine hits led by Wyatt Hayes with two doubles, Wade Bushur with two singles and an RBI, Andrew Wagoner with a double, Will Hecht with a single and two RBI, Aiden Feldhake and Keegan Koester had a single and an RBI each and Brayden Tucker added an RBI.

South Central had three hits, all singles by Hudson Moore, Lucas Bursott and Harrell.

At Brownstown

Neoga came calling and captured a 12-1 victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown in five innings Wednesday.

The Indians tallied three runs in the second and fourth, wrapped around a six-run third. Although Neoga had only three hits, the Indians were aided by four Brownstown/St. Elmo errors and 12 walks from three Bomber pitchers.

Trey Sheehan provided a single and a whopping five RBI. Landon Titus had a single and an RBI. Matt Propst added two RBI while Colin Blazich, Malik Coy and Keaton Lacy had an RBI each.

Btownstown/St. Elmo finshed with six hits led by Corey Hoopingarner with two singles and an RBI, Adam Atwood two singles and Hunter Poe with a double. BSE dropped to 5-10-1 on the season and is back in action Friday at Vandalia.
