Pirates, Cougars Win Baseball Season Openers

TOLEDO -- Cumberland and Brownstown/St. Elmo went through four scoreless innings before the Pirates broke loose with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 3-0 high school baseball victory in the season opener Monday.

The lone hits for the Pirates were a double by Jackson with an RBI and a single by Watkins.

Buescher went the distance on the mound, allowing four hits, no walks while striking out six.

Colllin Maxey and Lucas Powell had two singles each for Brownstown/St. Elmo. The Bombers return to action today at Shelbyville.

At Kinmundy

South Central opened the season by blanking Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 7-0 Monday.

The Cougars edged out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, then broke loose with five runs in the fourth and finished with one in the fifth.

Three pitchers combined for a one-hitter. Coen West went the first three innings, allowing no hits while striking out six. He was the winner. Brody Markley went 2.2 innings, with three walks and strix strikeouts. Zane Montes went the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

South Central had six hits in the contest. C. Smith led the way with a single, double and three RBI while Markley had a single and double. Trevan Sidwell, Lucas Bursott and Max Magnus had an RBI each.

The lone hit for the Bobcats was a double off the bat of Wyatt Rueff. CHBC isn't back in action until Friday at Newton.

At Kinmundy

At Marshall

Marshall broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run second and went on for a 5-2 victory over Neoga Monday.

Both teams had four hits and Marshall committed one error.

Neoga was led by James Ballinger with three singles and one RBI. Colin Blazich added an RBI and Trey Sheehan had a single.

Marshall's Huisinga had a double and drove in two runs while Matzke added a single and an RBI.

Both teams went through four pitchers.

At Dieterich

Lawrenceville came calling and went home with a 5-3 win over Dieterich Monday.

The Movin' Maroons held a 2-1 lead in the second inning but Lawrenceville came back with three runs in the top of the third to lead 4-2. Dieterich tallied a run in the sixth and Lawrenceville finished out with a run in the seventh.

Dieterich had only two singles, a double by Landen Keck with two RBI and a single by Andrew Hall.

Lawrenceville's E. Ivers picked up the win on the mound, going 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, one walk while striking out seven.

Dieterich also committed five errors in the contest.
